What has really happened?

It seemed to me that Wilder was trying to come up with a plan B after realising plan B got sussed.

I blame the players for not being good enough for plan A, never mind a plan B.

Wilder wasn't shy when questioned about players we missed out on.

Imagine where we'd be if we got the players Wilder wanted?
Call me old fashioned but I would want my best players on the pitch. Leaving our 2 most creative players on the bench just didn’t make sense.

3 signings that he definitely wanted were balogun, connolly and steffan and they were/are pretty garbage. Didn't he also want Dwight Gayle. Players like that im sure we would be riding high. Hes never shy of blaming other people but never actualy takes any of the blame himself.

Connolly was definitely his he should have been sacked for that error of judgement alone

14th in the League which was actually flattering.
Fan throwing a season ticket holder at him?

Drew a list of candidates before he randomly showed.
'If Steve told me the grass was green I'd go out and check'

That one yeah
Gibson didn't like or trust him, but if he was going to sack him it would have been in 2002 after the Leeds business. Not in 2006 after our best few seasons ever.

All the players Wilder was after? £9m Defensive Midfielder? £12m Striker? £10m attacking midfielder? What then? What if that didn’t quite work out? What is super Wilder couldn’t cut it with an extra £30m+ of talent?

“When I heard Newcastle were interested my world turned upside down.” - yeah alright Steve, that’ll endear you to the Middlesbrough fans and chairman.

I also think we’d have probably parted ways at the of that season, England or not. Wilder’s a bit snakey but McClaren wrote the book on that, he was shocking for it.

I think if the right player is available at the right price we would have bought players in. The media circus around Spence and the transfer fee didn't help. clubs started taking the ****. Rightly so we didn't over commit. We can't afford too.

Yeah its left us way short but that's where we are today and I'm sure there is money there for the right players come January.
Didn't want to over commit on the Coventry bloke so brought 3 spuds in instead

McClaren was going to be sacked after a season in which we reached the UEFA Cup Final, FA Cup Semis & League Cup Quarters? All after winning our first trophy and also qualifying for Europe via the league for the first time? And then fulfilling Gibson's dream of a team full of academy graduates?
Righto.
Yep, most of our fan base was absolutely fed up of him too. Oh the good old days.
