What has happened to all 11 players who signed for Middlesbrough under Garry Monk as Britt Assombalonga and Ashley Fletcher depart

It was confirmed last week that Middlesbrough duo Britt Assombalonga and Ashley Fletcher will leave the club at the end of the season – two players who joined Boro in their 2017 summer spending spree.

The Teessiders spent over £50million following their relegation from the Premier League when Garry Monk was appointed at the Riverside.

Boro brought in 11 players during that transfer window in their attempt to return to the top flight, and it’s fair to say the signings have been mixed.

The exits of Assombalonga and Fletcher, who both signed four-year deals when they arrived at Boro, means that Jonny Howson and Marvin Johnson are the only players left at the club who signed when Monk was in charge.

The standout signing on this list. After a challenging start at the Riverside, Howson, 32, has become a key player for Boro and was made club captain earlier this season.

We take a closer look at the other players who joined Boro during that period, including loan deals, and what has happened to them since.

Martin Braithwaite

Who would have thought a player who couldn't get in Tony Pulis' side would end up playing for Barcelona. The Dane has made 26 league appearances for the Spanish giants this season.

Britt Assombalonga

Boro's record signing has endured a disappointing season at the Riverside, scoring just five league goals, and is now set to leave on a free. The striker will depart with 47 goals in 161 appearances for the Teessiders.

Darren Randolph

The keeper returned to West Ham in January 2020 after an impressive spell at Boro. He has made just nine appearances since returning to The London Stadium.

Ashley Fletcher

Another player who will leave on a free this summer. Fletcher was offered a new deal to stay at the Riverside in January but chose not to sign it. Another signing which didn't work out.

George Miller

Signed as a 19-year-old, the striker made just one senior appearance for Boro. After spells at Bradford and Scunthorpe, Miller has ended up at Barnsley but has made just five league appearances this season.

Ryan Shotton

After his Boro contract expired last summer, the defender moved to Australia to play for A-League side Melbourne Victory.

Lewis Baker

One of Chelsea's academy products who has featured for several clubs on loan. Now 25, Baker has spent this season on loan at Turkish club Trabzonspor.

Marvyn Johnson

Unfortunate not to have received more game time this season. Johnson will also be out of contract this summer, with Boro set to hold talks with the winger at the end of the season.

Connor Roberts

One of Boro's forgettable loan signings who made just four appearances for the Teessiders. Since then, Roberts has become a Welsh international and is Swansea's first-choice right-back.

I imagine they are all now loaded and definitely payed less at new clubs😂

I would say we've had our moneys worth out of Howson and maybe Johnson (eventually).

I will say we probably had the best keeper in the division in Randolph. Yet sold him for what we signed him for due to wages.

It was a sorry 'scattergun' spending spree that's taken 3 managers and 4 years to end. That said Pulis wasn't much better despite always moaning about having no money.

All of those signed for fees were awful value for money inc wages. Even with Howson we could have got better back then. It was a scandalous summer of business.
pulis then did every bit as badly, with Flint and Saville arguably worse.
The Mail article also missed the useless Cyrus.

He seemed to be in and out quickly - his agent might have benefited more than the club did with his football talent? ;)

For me
Randolph was excellent and worth the money.
Jonny Howsen turned out to be an adequate buy.
Marvin Johnson is ok but a little overpriced if 2.5 million is correct.
I don't blame Garry Monk for Braithwaite's attitude. He could have been good.
But I am struggling with the rest.
If we had payed a 1/4 of what we spent it would be too much for what we got.
I am sure other clubs were chuckling to themselves when they saw what we were getting for our money.
We were foolish. But what's done is done. We should move on.

Very annoying but its not just us is it?
Take a look at club's like Stoke.
Football needs some kind of 'reset' - especially regarding salaries.
But reading about things such as the owners of Spotify wanting to buy Arsenal you can't see anything changing anytime soon. :(
