What are your thoughts on Elton John?

I saw him tonight at the O2. The wife is more of a fan than I am and I got her these tickets 18 months ago, but I do know most of his hits pretty well. Good performance, 2.5h set, vocals were much better than that hilarious performance he did on the BBC1 Covid “HomeTogether” thing.

All in all I think he’s decent, and as a couple said above, to be a pretty much mainstream performer for over 50 years is impressive and basically means you have to be “good” on some level. He’s not a hero of mine or anything, but he’s a pretty talented bloke. Can’t help but feel his lyricist goes a bit under the radar though!
 
Yellow Brick Road Album was his best. I’m not a fan either as I thought much of his work was too commercial. Saw him at Wembley back in the 80s, which was a fun day out but there was better artists imo.

Tumbleweed Connection is (from memory) good in patches. I am not sure how you missed Elton’s dulcet tones in that song SJB on first hearing. The album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is a classic. Funeral for a Friend which starts that album segwaying into Love Lies Bleeding is an example of great early John.
His later stuff for me is meh.
 
Never done anything for me, but he is a hell of a piano player. It's always struck me that his singing voice sounds like he's from somewhere south of Texas.

Tiny Dancer, Sacrifice, this train don't stop, and pinball Wizard(obviously sound track version) are on all my older music playlists.

Candle In The Wind, first line; "Goodbye Norma Jeane" the song as written is about Marilyn Monroe (born Norma Jeane Mortenson) and was re-recorded for Prinny D with the first line changed to "Goodbye England's Rose" etc.
 
I remember me dad playing "Goosbye Yellow Brick Road" and "Honky Chateau" in the 70's and did my very best to hate it - unfortunately, both were really good albums.

Isn't there a movie out there about Elton and Bernie Taupin?

I think they split for a while and it became apparent how important Bernie was.

I had a crush on Kiki Dee when I was a teen so I have always loved Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.

I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues was a break up song the first time I had my heart broken. Wonderful song.

Just realised this is the perfect opportunity to post the shatner sings rocket Man clip. I discovered that this was at the Saturn awards in the year I was born. I looked up the exact date as I was suddenly struck with the certainty that this was on the day I was born, but sadly I was a month too late. I also discovered that star wars swept the boards at the Saturn awards that year - hosted by shatner. Other nominees were Julie Christie for demon seed and the final ray harryhausen Sinbad film. They both seem like they are from different eras. Anyhow shatner....

He's a bit wierd though. Saw a documentary following him and a woman shouted yoohoo Elton at him when he was playing tennis.
He went mental stormed off shouting how dare she. Demanded a private plane to take him home.
