What are we all reading?

just finished the Midlife cyclist. Good read but very scientific.

My next read is actually a recommendation from the Sadiq Khan - Cannabis thread - "Chasing the Scream by Johnathan Hari

Just read Jack Maggs by Peter Carey which I enjoyed. Reading Slaughterhouse 5 by Kurt Connegut which is a bit weird but can't put it down.

Just finished rereading the series of crownerJohn by Bernard Knight and about a third of the way through Johnathan strange and Mr norrel which is fantastic.

The Islandman - Tomas O'Crohan

Tomas was born on the Great Blasket Island in 1856 and died there in 1937 - he shares with us his full and dangerous life in a primitive community, often stormbound, hungry when the crops failed or the sea too stormy to get a boat out - flourishing when a storm brought food and materials to the Islands through spillages and wrecks on to the strand (beach)

gonna take my Christopher Brookmyre collection on hols for a re-read (not be confused with his alter ego Chris Brookmyre who writes pure crime fiction). Can't describe him better than this

Scottish novelist whose novels, generally in a crime or police procedural frame, mix comedy, politics, social comment and action with a strong narrative. He has been referred to as a Tartan Noir author

I've read a few of his later "Chris" novels of late and miss the days of Parlabane and the charming Zal. I've long had a theory Mr Brookmyre has a friend from Middlesbrough as in one of his books a terrorist character who turns out to be a "goodie" gets ***ed off by being continually asked if he's from Sunderland. Smacks of a in joke between mates.

Aye I stopped reading him after Parlabane. I was addicted to those books for a while.

The girl and the moon by Mark Lawrence.

Decent trilogy but not his best. If you're into fantasy he's well worth checking out, has some very original/creative ideas. The grey/red sister books are better and set in the same world but these "girl and the .. " books are still a decent follow up.

I'm a big fan of sword & sorcery fantasy epics (David Gemma, Robert Jordan, George Martin) . Anybody got any recommendations?

I usually have about four novels on the go at any given time and maybe a bit of non-fiction too. I'm still working my way through The Illuminatus Trilogy at the moment and dipping in and out of the complete works of Lovecraft even though I've read all of those before and reading another Cesar Aira novella and a book of essays on Twin Peaks.

I’ve just finished The Lamplighters by Emma Stonex. A very enjoyable update of the poem Flannan Isle.

Concrete Dreams now has it.
