What’s the official cause of this virus

A couple of Chinese scientists published a paper - that has now been removed - that said the virus originated in the only Bio-level 4 lab in China, in Wuhan, when a lab worker got sick from an infected bat. The lab has been working on the SARS virus. The following refers to the paper:

Other scientists have condemned this report

However it is interesting that earlier this year Xi announced a tightening of standards at Chinese research labs. I heard that on a news report but don't have a reference.

There'll be conspiracy theories up the wazoo on this topic, but the fact it originated in Wuhan of all places in China is of interest.

The problem is that Chinese money has been used to corrupt politicians and others all over the West. So even if it was true, Western leaders would probably deny it. My guess is we'll never know.

The research paper linked to below, shows scientific evidence that would argue against this being a result of genetic engineering.

The proximal origin of SARS-CoV-2

The paper is authored by:

As it says:
Herein, we review what can be deduced about the origin and early evolution of SARS-CoV-2 from the comparative analysis of available genome sequence data. In particular, we offer a perspective on the notable features in the SARS-CoV-2 genome and discuss scenarios by which these features could have arisen.

Importantly, this analysis provides evidence that SARS-CoV-2 is not a laboratory construct nor a purposefully manipulated virus.

[...] the SARS-CoV-2 spike appears to be the result of selection on human or human-like ACE2 permitting another optimal binding solution to arise. This is strong evidence that SARS-CoV-2 is not the product of genetic engineering.

There's also a paper published in The Lancet, co-signed by 27 public health scientists, strongly condemning the conspiracy theories surrounding the origin of the virus.

The authors of The Lancet statement note that scientists from several countries who have studied SARS-CoV-2 “overwhelmingly conclude that this coronavirus originated in wildlife,” just like many other viruses that have recently emerged in humans. “Conspiracy theories do nothing but create fear, rumours, and prejudice that jeopardise our global collaboration in the fight against this virus,” the statement says.

Who’s official stance is it’s unidentified

Have read this morning that case zero was November 17th in China. No other details

however, the real interaction took place in fish a market !! in a location miles from the sea !! (a sort of Leicester !).. what's that all about

Fish also live in rivers and lakes, though.

From what I've heard the market in Wuhan also sold wildlife for eating. Bats in China apparently live fairly happily with about 400 different strains of coronavirus, it's possible they can be transmitted to humans. It's very likely that this was the cause. The only reason it doesn't happen more often is humans and bats don't have a lot of interaction.
