What’s mighty about the Boro?

My Mrs is a Villa fan, and mentioned they were playing Alkmaar tonight. I mentioned that we played them on the way to the UEFA Cup final.
“how the mighty have fallen” she said.
I reminded her that we’re still the Mighty Boro, and she had the nerve to say, “What’s mighty about them”.

The reality is as redwurzel says, punching above our weight.

Mighty means…possessing great and impressive power or strength, especially because of size.

burra

adjective

bur·ra
ˈbə(ˌ)rä

India
: GREAT

—used chiefly in phrases as a title of respect

In Albanian burra translates as men.

so technically Mighty Burra in Englabanian = Mighty Men

or …..

In Hinglish it means Mighty Great

Whereas Villa in Albanian translates as ‘vilë’ … which is wonderfully true (try it and see using google translate) then show her it 😉

We often punch above our weight - I would say Boro has matched Villa over the last 30 years, despite Villa been the biggest club in the Midlands in that period.

I also think there is some irony in the term mighty Boro.
The Midlands is a big region and “bigness” of a club a vague concept. Fan base for sure. But Leicester have won a Premier League title, an FA Cup and two league cups in that period to Villa’s b***r all.

Ask her if it was weird winning the European Cup after coming 11th in the First Division. (Unless she can't remember).

That fact has always fascinated me slightly, as clearly you can't claim to be the 'best' team in Europe.

Mighty is much better than Super .
Mighty is a Northern term , and it fits in with Boro songs,
Super is a soft Southern term , Super Chelsea , makes me cringe .
It could be derived from ' I'm goin ome for mighty ' which can be heard around Teesside at 4.30pm
I like Mighty it sounds good .
