I'm not sure this was the case. That way we would have likely known a year in advance that he would be off out the door, so you would think we would have had a list of viable targets to replace him, and probably held preliminary discussions with clubs, and maybe even the players.widely covered in every thread about the topic that he was persuaded last season to give us one more season, if we didn’t sell him this season he would be in final year and we’d get far less, and have an unhappy player.
If we knew we were going to take £10m, then we should have been practically certain that someone would meet that price, so we needed a replacement with equal certainty. I don't think we even had any bids mentioned in the media?
I can't imagine the plan was to know Tav was leaving, and that we were going to replace him with Mowatt, and not suffer major consequences. Can't imagine Wilder would have been all that thrilled with that either.
I think they probably just bid £5m, and then because we got them up to £10m we thought we were getting a good price, where as in reality they had our pants down, and the club had Wilders pants down by not replacing him.
