We've got the best Tavernier brother.

Last night was probably the first time I've watched a whole Rangers game and it was odd watching Tav the Elder, some of the mannerisms are almost weirdly identical to Marcus. But what I saw was that "Our" Tav seems quicker more influential and more skilful compared to his older brother.

It seems to me that when you get two footballing brothers it is nearly always the junior bro that is the pick of the pair?

Any science to this or just my limited viewpoint?

You may be correct in the future but if you look at James Taverniers stats you will see he is the top scorer in the europa league from right back in a 4 man defence. His stats for goals and assists domestically and at European level are scary. I think Big Tav has had a Stella career so far. He had an off night last but his performances to get them to the final were really, really good.

I'm confident Tav senior is a better finisher😉

Although hands down we have the best one. I imagine he will go for a few quid at some point.

I was expecting a bit more from him last night. He didn't really shine. In fact I had £5 on at 40/1 for him to get a brace. Just needed a couple of pens or a free kick.

James Tavernier is a very good player, just plays in a different position, he's surprisingly influential from right back. There's an argument to say our Tav has more natural ability but that's why he plays an attacking midfield role.
Agree about some of the mannerisms, it was like watching a bulked up version of Tav

Well I'm a younger brother and I can confirm with absolute certainty I am a better player than my brother. So yes, your viewpoint is 100% scientifically proven

Yeah, they mentioned that. Does he take their pens? I saw that he took a few dead balls (to no great effect)

Yeah he does, but he does score goals arriving at back post too and gets plenty of assists. He’s a brilliant player.

Had a relatively poor game last night, but he's had plenty of excellent games this season

Our Tav probably will be quicker because he's 7 years younger.

Yeah the position is relative. Think this is the best analysis so far

If you judged Juninho on his League Cup Final performance against Leicester you wouldn't rate him either. Or Tav of the Boro during one of his many less than inspirational performances. You need more than one game to judge.
True. And I acknowledge that Rangers were playing a good Bundesliga side not Derby County. But even so I thought he was poor. It was pretty poor game to watch and I thought the ref let too many fouls go without yellow cards allowing both teams to break up play with impunity.

I do think that "our" Tav will have a better career than his older bruv. But it could be that I'm biased. I tend to take stats with a pinch of salt so the number of goals and assists for "our" Tav doesn't accurately reflect his influence and contribution to the team throughout the season. And of course I haven't watched Rangers much this season (half an hour here or there against Celtic I think, perhaps the odd kick about with the make-weights from the lower regions of the SPL

Having watched Rangers entire run to the final I would definitely disagree with your assessment of James Tav not being influential. Top scorer in the competition, main set-piece taker, and the captain during some great displays.

As mentioned it's probably just a limited viewpoint having watched the final last night which definitely wasn't his best game of the run. But he still looked very steady at the highest level against a good opposition (Kostic in particular being a tough opponent).

Also agree with wilko_perm that they play completely different positions so would have different skillsets. Our Tav probably has more natural ability hence why he plays higher up the pitch.

But we could really do with Tav matching his older brothers scoring rate if he's still with us next season.

On the footballing brothers piece its pretty even

Gary + Phil Neville - older G Nev
Fillipo + Simone Inzaghi - older F Inzaghi
Michael + Brian Laudrup - older M Laudrup

Kolo + Yaya Toure - younger Y Toure
Jack + Bobby Charlton - younger B Charlton
Erwin + Ronald Koeman - younger R Koeman

You also need to see them play at the same level week in week out. Marcus is playing at a much higher level generally although they’ve done brilliantly to reach the Europa League final. A competition that is much stronger that their bread and butter league but one off ties and big occasions can raise performance levels.

He’s done well in the Europa league for a few seasons in a row though so he’s shown he can do it at a much higher level than championship football. It’s a tough one as I think it’s all position relative and they are at different stages of their careers.

How many goals and assists did our attacking midfielder get this season?
I think he only got 5 or 6 which he needs to improve on. Assists i'm not sure but it's not a great indicator in our side given that our forwards spurn so many chances.
