Westgarth Club

Maybe the uni has put a offer in the trusties couldn't refuse?
56 trusties caving into a few grand in their pocket to save what looks like a failing venture at the moment.. we’re all struggling at the moment, you could hardly blame them.

Was The Crown ever really a pillar of the Music scene ?

I'd swap out The Crown for the Town Hall, certainly when I was younger.
Yeah.. come to think of it.. it had everything apart from the bands. The temple started off promising before the owners ran it into the ground.

The Crown needs to be brought back as a venue imo..

Don't blame them, just wish it wasn't so

The crown did have bands on for a time on Thursday nights. It wasn't a great venue for it tbh because it was such a large open space height wise, so needed a really large sound system

The crown would cost a fortune to bring back, the building was falling apart when it was open. They'd only converted the visible part of it and the rest of the building was still original. After rotting for this many years will cost a fortune

The temple had a "who has the deepest pockets" war with the spencleys and lost, they tried to get people over from the dickens by reducing cost of pints and pool. I remember pints being done for practically nothing at one point, they just couldn't compete. After that they were stuck with all the rough crowd who stuck it out and was loads of violence in the area. Always wonder what the flats are like inside

The location of the club is absolutely PERFECT for students.

Was a great effort ever made to attract and cater for them? Getting them through the door for events/prices focused on them.

A lot of venues struggle midweek for traffic.. but the location of the Westgarth gave it a huge leg up to get all those students through the door.

Like everyone else, I’m gutted about this. I must admit I wasn’t sure at the start about gigs moving from The Knights to the Westgarth but I was soon won over. We’ve had many, many a happy night in there and seen some absolutely brilliants acts (praise here to TKASG as well as the venue itself).

And, as much as I also love The Chapel, their new room doesn’t strike me as being anywhere near as big as upstairs in The Westgarth. (Happy to be proved wrong though).

Is there anything that can be done to save The Westgarth? I know we’re not quite on a par with Sheffield and The Leadmill, but surely we can’t just roll over and let this little gem sink without trace?

Downstairs at The Westgarth is THE best music venue in the country and I include the Brudenell in that.

Perhaps if Middlesbrough Council had been as supportive and forward thinking as Stockton Council is with their music scene...
Lefty - I have edited this as I realise I should wait for the Westgarth to make their official announcements before passing comments about this - I know Andy, Henry and myself met up with Mbro Council about 5 or so years ago about the Westgarth and other initiatives - there were stumbling blocks on different sides as I recall, But what is happening in Stockton, private and council working in tandem is really positive. But there is a vast effort there from local club owners etc.

Ok.

Never the less, Stockton Council really supports it's music and arts. It promotes and puts funds into things like Stockton Calling. Twisterella has had very little by comparison. Progressive, visionary vs myopic in my view.

Count me in to help.

I've already tweeted the Mayor and council on Twitter. Anyone know the best other methods of contacting the people we need to contact? Which email address is best for this sort of thing?
