Westgarth Club

Just seen that it is closing as from tomorrow 😔
Absolutely terrible news for Mbro and Teesside.
Coming at the end of Independent Venue Week and following on from the closure of Basecamp. A real body blow.
Feel so sorry for manager Steve Callaghan.

Some sad news to relay.

As from tomorrow the Westgarth Social Club is closing down. The 111 trustees have decided to close the place down as its been losing money since coming out of Covid and has never really recovered.

The building will be sold.

As regards the gigs

Base camp was more of a pop up place anyway.. the Westgarth is an institution! This is a huge blow for boro!

Basecamp wasn't a patch on the Westgarth. Gutted about this and sad for Steve who ran it and all the fantastic people who promoted gigs there. You know what gutted as I said earlier does not even come close to how I feel about this.
The Westgarth was like our Brudenell Social Club.. TKASG put some totally mint nights on there totally gutting. Bodies of Water, Jonny, First Aid Kit, Fistfull of Fivers, I am Kloot.. to name just a few. Genuinely gutting

The way this news was broken is absolutely disgraceful btw. The absolute walloper who broke it should have at least had the decency to wait until a formal statement was issued by the club. Shameful, tbh.

The manager told a promoter who puts gig on in there, who then posted it on Facebook. Don’t see the problem here.

It means a lot to a lot of people. Haven’t seen the Facebook post but maybe they were just gutted to hear the news and didn’t know a formal statement was going out.

I hope all the promoters have a discussion and try to find an alternative. I know they are somewhat in competition but the more promoters using the same venue can only help the local music scene rather than splinter off to different venues.

The Arena, The Cornerhouse, The Crown & The Westgarth

The Four Pillars of the Middlesbrough Music Scene..

Sounds like The Westgarth is being sold off for flats rather than rescued and preserved as a cultural asset.
