Westgarth Club

It's a private, failed business. I don't know what the Council or the Mayor are supposed to do?

If the council went round the town buying every failed, skint business, they'd be in an even bigger financial hole that they're in now.

The owners of the building will be making money from the sale, more than they're getting from operating it as it is now. It's their decision.
Council is always buying up empty buildings. In fact I think they own The Crown amongst others.

You're not an 'independent' councillor are you?

It's an ideal spot for local authority investment, close to the Uni and the services on Linthorpe Road. It's time Boro had a small, central, performing arts centre. I know the one next to the Little Theatre is decent but isn't Boro big enough to support the arts, Stockton can.

What makes you think that?

I'm just a normal bloke on the street that would question how the local authority could afford to purchase a run down, dilapidated working men's club when it is in a mountain of debt and can hardly make ends meet with the huge children's services bill.

Be class if they could, like. Maybe the private owner of the building is happy to sell it to the potential buyer it has lined up.

I saw someone berating Preston on socials a couple of weeks back because he wasn't able to offer a solution to a mobile coffee van owner only taking £5 over the counter in a day and was struggling to cover the cost of the fee for the spot.........in Stockton. Absolutely tearing him a new one. Off it really.. how people's knee jerk reaction is to blame the council or the mayor for all failed enterprises.

Remember we still don't have anything official about the Westgarth and the story has now been taken down from the facebook page where it was revealed. It seems quite certain it is true but we do not know the story from the Westgarth themselves yet and there are peoples livelihoods at stake here. So, we need to respect that and await their official announcement.

Seems strange. I am a trustee of the Westgarths and have not been contacted about this so, as far as I know, nothing has been decided or voted for as yet. It is only the music events which is keeping it open though. Not many go in now and it is closed quite a lot during the week.

Where is Teesside Uni and or Middlesbrough College when this is all going down? Do the students only all sit in and watch Fuggin EastEnders and Eurovision qualifiers now?
I suspect the university will have an eye on the building to covert to accommodation for students.

What happened to that place that opened where Riley’s used to be? In fact, did it ever actually open?
Didn’t really take off did it.. moved on to boxing matches and fighting events for a very short period and is now a restaurant (last I checked)

We have still have.. Disgraceland, Pineapple Black, The Auxiliary, The Chapel, Playbrew..

erm.. is upstairs in Dr Browns still available?

The Bongo hasn’t been open for a while.. I wonder if that would do well as a music venue? The Crown needs to be brought back as a performance space..as it’s completely wasted at the moment.

For the more awkwardly situated.. Kalinka Bar (Uncle Alberts) aka Wickers World is still shut.. as is the Arena. Base Camp/House of Blah Blah.. still closed.

Not even sure if Dr Brown's is open anymore, II'm sure it's been shut the last couple of home games.
It went though a weird period didn’t it.. not wanting any any bands with female singers.. then a change in ownership.. back to normal.. said to be promoting live music.. the upstairs room never got used and now shut.

Sticky Fingers promised to be a possible venue.. but then I don’t think they liked performances interrupting their drinks sales!

NE Volume (Music Lounge) seems to be back on its feet in Stockton, Ku Bar has expanded, the Globe seems to be doing well for bigger touring acts.
