Westgarth Club

Like everyone else, I’m gutted about this. I must admit I wasn’t sure at the start about gigs moving from The Knights to the Westgarth but I was soon won over. We’ve had many, many a happy night in there and seen some absolutely brilliants acts (praise here to TKASG as well as the venue itself).

And, as much as I also love The Chapel, their new room doesn’t strike me as being anywhere near as big as upstairs in The Westgarth. (Happy to be proved wrong though).

Is there anything that can be done to save The Westgarth? I know we’re not quite on a par with Sheffield and The Leadmill, but surely we can’t just roll over and let this little gem sink without trace?
I suppose we need to hear the official statement from the club trustees first. We need to hear officially where they stand etc. Then we must try and do something.

Thats what i was thinking hasnt exactly been advertised ? Googled it looks like its next to the old phoenix squash club.
Is directly behind the Phoenix Squash Club - it is always difficult to promote somewhere's location behind an empty building - remember the difficulties in telling people where Base Camp was.

We do need to get the official statement not that leaked by a promoter.
But I will contact MP Andy McDonald - I was talking to him on Saturday before the game about Don Revie.

I've tweeted McDonald, Clarke and Preston and emailed the Council, but this needs a lot of people doing the same. I ain't voting for anyone of these who doesn't at least try to do something.

Where is the chapel? In Boro?

Yeah, just round the corner from the old phoenix squash club.

The Chapel, 16 Whitehouse Street, Middlesbrough, TS5 4BY

It’s got a nice intimate space for small gigs., like the folk club, a bigger function room for slightly bigger gigs and I think the outside space could be interesting in the summer.

What can they actually do for a business selling up though? What would you like the council to do?

Maybe Westgarth will be quids in from selling up to the university or a developer for apartments

Went to a few do's at the Phoenix many years ago.

How much is it losing a month?

How much does it pay in rates?

What is the purpose of the trust? I wouldn't have thought it was to make money specifically.

I think like Rob says, it’s probably best to wait for the official statement.

The value of the site as apartments may far exceed anything possible as a music venue. Perhaps they are thinking there could be the possibility of reinvesting into a cheaper premises

I have emailed the arts/culture officer. I think Tony Parkinson would be a good shout, Chief Exec, as he is outside the political circuit. But bear in mind the recent cuts proposals were to cut the Events budget to nil. That was open to public consultation as I said on here.

It's a private, failed business. I don't know what the Council or the Mayor are supposed to do?

If the council went round the town buying every failed, skint business, they'd be in an even bigger financial hole that they're in now.

The owners of the building will be making money from the sale, more than they're getting from operating it as it is now. It's their decision.

Maybe not everyone's favourite place but The Longlands have heard the news and have put themselves forward as an option.

Been a few times to gigs there and it has everything that is needed.

Yes, we can't interfere in the market, the market is always right.

Reinvesting into the crown would at least take some of the sting out.. nothing will replace the Westgarth. But it might just be that the decision had been made and it’s out of everyone’s hands.
