I agree there is now inertia, but that is because there has been that prolonged disappointment. Carrick's "honeymoon" is over 2 years ago. There is inertia. There is an initial honeymoon period but once results go south that drains away quite quickly. Once it's gone, takes an awful lot to get it back.
We could win 6 from the next 8 and qualify for the play-offs and yes, there would be excitement and hope but there wouldn't be a lot of *confidence* in Carrick. The second things start to go wrong again, which in football always happens, people will turn back against him. Even if we got promoted, there would be a fair percentage of the fanbase who would put it down to more luck than judgement.
At this point, I reckon the fanbase is something like 10% pro-Carrick, 50% on the fence but tending to anti and 40% anti no matter what happens next. There is no realistic way for Carrick turn that around at this point without promotion or at least getting to Wembley only to lose to a bad ref decision or bad luck despite deserving to win, that kind of thing.
Even then look at the Karanka Charltongate episode and the fallout, yet rememebr those away followings at Bolton, Burnley and Brum straight after and the euphoria at home to Brighton less than 2 months on.
Our crowd will latch on quickly if it believes there's an inkling of hope.
I'm not sure many do just now and Carrick/the team don't have a bank of goodwill like Karanka and his team had.
