We clearly have money to spend!

What delighted me and must have completely shut the naysayers up about Gibbo this week was that we tried (without success) to turn Archers pending loan move into a permanent one.
I don't think this bit of info can be understated. This is a 21 year old, U21 International with 7 goals in 20 games in this league, some fantastic appearences and is so highly rated by his parent club they kept him around with their fan base desperate to get the lad in the team.
He would not have come cheap. He us not coming cheap on loan, Preston said about much.

On top of this it's been made very clear that we have been, and still could be, the side wanting Ross Stewart the most only being put off by the feeling that he wants to stay put. That's a striker that Sunderland will not let go of unless they get a very big amount of cash.

During the summer alot of people complained how Gibbo wasn't investing money in the squad and backing Chris Wilder but on the face of it he really did, despite his lack of trust in him that became evident further down the line.

The questions of Gibbo's investment in our squad continue to absolutely baffle me. There's been seasons of belt tightening before but you must remember this is a man that spent big to achieve goals that for some reason or another didn't happen.

He gave Chris Wilder
Flo Balogun (apparently 40k a week wages)
Aaron Connolly (PL Player)
Riley Mcgree (£3million + beating off Celtic)
Alone in his first window.

Pulis got Aiden Flint (£6million) George Saville (7million) Mo Besic (Tried for £5million permanent)

Monk got £40 million + inherited an excellent squad full of talent. He got our record signing.

Karanka got Stuani, Downing, Nugent, Rhodes and Gaston in the Championship
Nearest, Valdes, De Roon , Fischer, Bamford in the PL.

My point being that Gibbo has continually put his hand in his pocket. Yes we've generated money from sales but you got to in football. You've got to realise if you look through our signings, although a lot have been dross he has still put his hand in his pocket on top of financing our club absolutely amazingly. In a time where many fans worry their club could be gone with one bad move I never worry about us because I know Gibbo would Never EVER let it happen.

Which leads me to this season. We sold Tav and Spence for big money, inevitably some goes into the club, but there was a lot of complaints that Gibbo wouldn't spend.
It's became evident he did trust Wilder but enter Michael Carrick.
Gibbo trusts Scott, Carrick & Woodgate. There is clearly money there for them, the difference is with this team of people they seem to be sensibly plotting what they want, who they want and then being ready to go for it. Its lovely to see Boro striking early.

For me Archer, Barlaser and a wide man + maybe 1 more center mid and we'll have had an excellent January, setting us up to have a real push for the rest of the season. UTFB

We talk as if Barlaser is a done deal, maybe not even close?
Archer is a real prospect but needs to hit the ground running ,instant impact needed, not easy for him

I’m hopeful that we didn’t pull the trigger on a few deals over the summer on the basis that gibbo didn’t trust Wilder with the tav and Spence millions after the Burnley debacle and behind the scenes issues.

We’ll soon see!

I would happy see us invest more moderately in the first team squad if it meant continuing to avoid being anywhere close to FFP limits, investing in infrastructure (stadium in particular) or clearing debt.

As pointed out many times before, big money on transfer fees rarely works out for us.

Gibbo is the best chairman in the Football League we are VERY lucky to have him 👍🙏
Good servant and loyal.Has best interests. His decision making at times he as been woeful but on a positive note appointments of Scott and Carrick a master stroke hope it continues.

If he didn't trust Wilder he should have moved him on in the summer or before.
Carrick appears to be a very good appointment.
At last a good decision.
Let's not do the whole great chairman bit again.
It's a pity that Carrick wasn't appointed in the close season. I wonder if he was on the Gibson/Scott radar back then??

It looked like Wilder was a lost cause after the Burnley affair but I think fans were willing to forgive and forget - I wonder if the Club were thinking along the same lines?

I'm never a fan of spending big in January, it rarely seems to be effective and is often more expensive as desperate teams chase the few available players.

Let's not do the whole great chairman bit again.
Why not? Because it doesn't fit the narrative you have adopted...

Gibson is not the Messiah but he doesn't come with the baggage of dirty money (ahem NUFC et al) or ulterior motivation (Glazers etc.) so rather than dismiss decisions which IMO always seem to be made with the best interests of the club at heart but sometimes fall short let's just be grateful for what we have rather than looking enviously across the sweetshop at what we don't.

There he is! Steve Gibson IS a great chairman, he’s always put his money where his mouth is and backed us. Some decisions he has got wrong but who hasn’t. He’s the best thing to happen to our football club.

Why not? He is a GREAT chairman. Without him and his investment we'd be a 3rd tier club with 14K through the gates. We're a small town and should hold him in the highest regard. Has he made mistakes yes........ but so do the biggest clubs in the world (just look at Man Utd).

We have had only one run of fewer top flight seasons in our history than since 2009.
We are £140m underwater and continue to be completely beholden to him.

“Small towns” don’t get 30k of their own supporters in the second tier and sell 20k season tickets. Stop belittling the club.

He has made a good decision it appears with Carrick. I’m delighted with that.
Let’s see what Scott actually does.

Dont think it’s ever really been a question of how much he will invest, more how reckless he has been at times with the clubs finances.

Listing all of those players we have clearly massively overspent on isn’t anything argument for a good owner, quite the opposite. Imagine where the club would actually be if those millions had been invested in the right players and management.
