We’re not the only ones who thought we would sign Roberto Carlos

Loads of clubs will enquire about players and be put off by the fee. Very different to being "close to signing" - even if they could afford the fee, chances are the club they eventually moved to was already monitoring them.
 
According to Steve Gibson at the time he was Boro bound along with Romario - obviously the deals could not have been 100% cast iron. Imagine Romario alongside Ravanelli - it would have been explosive in every sense.
 
Unlike villa though we had his best man and friend already at our club so I think our claim has more credence.

Thought it was Gabriel Batistuta. Plus Cafu as well as Carlos.
 
I remember literally days or weeks after signing Rav Wendy whatshername on the local news saying we were linked with Batitusta. When stuff made it on to Ceefax or the telly in those days it was seen as highly credible. Felt like it might happen at one point.

I always thought the potential Romario signing was the summer after (if we’d stayed up).

Like I say though, I’d be interested to hear if Batistuta or Romario were ever even aware of our interest and just how close it was.

Didn’t know Juninho and Roberto Carlos were best pals?
