Watmore- will he or won’t he?

I honestly thought him signing up would be a forgone conclusion- apparently not it seems. Interest from other clubs, could we get rebuffed for him being able to earn more elsewhere?

Certainly the comments from Warnock indicate a deal is not cut and dried. Be disappointing if he did move on to pastures new.

Disappointing but not disastrous if he decided to go elsewhere. He’s a bit of a longer term risk still and if a club are desperate to sign him for big money then I say good luck to him.

We obviously felt he needed to prove his fitness and show his body could cope with the Championship after so many serious injuries. He has done that and clearly other clubs have noticed. I think he could be key in a promotion push so we should be offering decent terms. If we don’t he has to do what’s best for him and his family.

If we cannot secure a deal for a player that was out of contract and local, what chance do we have of bringing anybody from abroad or from a premier league side.

Agree with that CD. When I wrote he had proved his ability to cope, I meant appeared to do so. Signing any player with his injur record is always a risk.

I'd like him to sign, and I think he'd be making a big mistake if he didn't.

I still expect him to, his current deal doesn't round out till some point in January so it's not yet a problem.

I agree it's more disappointing than a disaster. You would think hearing that he's a 'top bloke' etc that he would sign. That said you don't know what his agents been up to.

He also lives in the North East so you'd think a no brainer.

You can see why we maybe hesitant with wages and contact length. We shouldn't forget he's been injured for nearly 2 and a half years. The last thing we want is a 2-3 year deal on 10-20k a week and he gets crocked.

The best deal for us is clearly a contract until the summer. Then add on a contact extension (possible pay rise) if he remains fit. That's clearly not the best deal for him.

I guess if Norwich or whoever offer more money and longer contract then you can't hammer him for it. He's 26 and maybe one of his last decent contracts.

I hope he signs. He's been a breath of fresh air and given us something different. I would argue his form did for Roberts. That said I don't want us held to ransom or commiting to something that may backfire.

It does seem to have gone on longer than expected. I am sure 4 goals has seen his agents demands shift.

I think it will be interesting to see if he's included tomorrow evening. He was a none playing sub at Brum. If he doesn't figure at all tomorrow it could be a telling 'sign'.

You couldn’t blame him if he want elsewhere.. he doesn’t owe us anything. I’d think I was on to a good thing here and stick it out. He could be one twinge away from no career.. tough call.

I’d be surprised if anyone comes in for him based on what he’s done so far - it’s a small number of games to be making such an investment on.

I do, he'll sign on the dotted line 👍

Presumably the negotiations only started after the Preston game, going off Warnock's comments, and in the case of Bola's new deal, Bola said discussions had been going on for weeks.

It's probably nothing to worry about.
He was training with us for ages before he signed in the first place.

Great post

Great post summing up the position with watmore.
His agents may well be playing hard ball given his performances however he is an intelligent lad so hopefully sees sense because if he leaves for a longer deal then he has chased money and NW is the best thing that’s happened to watmore for a very long time so it’ll be a big mistake just like k. Moore made going to Cardiff under an average manager.

I agree, we're just seeing something that's not there
He will sign & gladly sign, to uproot & go to another club to once again prove yourself again when everything hex wants is here
If he proves his fitness he'll be rewarded at the Boro, if everything goes well for him next year then potentially he could be a PL player

Whatmore, get it, do you want than the people around you having faith in you

18 month contract now on decent money to retain him and enable a future fee; assess his fitness and form to the end of the season, then offer him a new three year deal then.

Agree an 18 month contract isn't a disaster for either party. Just gives him a bit of security that he's got a club next season.

We've seen with Mcnair / Dijksteel etc that we will offer new and improved terms if you do the biz👍

Also love to see Johnson get an extension. He's contacts up in the summer. He's more than done enough for another (also played post lockdown whilst others sacked it off)
