Watford v burnley

Burnley looked great in their first game, but on tonight's performance I think they may struggle.

As for Watford doing a Fulham?.. they won't make the top two if they continue to only record 5 shots at home.

They will both be in the mix. Watford will probably snag one of the autos.

Of course both teams may lose a player or two.

Not seen anything impressive from Watford yet, but I think they've got enough quality in their squad to stay up there.

Their manager will take time to adjust to the higher league too.

Depends if he is given the time to adjust. You are fully aware it is a club with no patience for not winning. As I say wasn’t that impressed with either side.

Not one team will do a Fulham this season , nowhere near

Were Fulham really that good?

The last championship winners to end the season with fewer points were Cardiff in the 12/13 season.

Maybe Fulham eased off a bit towards the end, but the number of goals they scored also masked the fact they dropped more points than most league winners.

I'll stick my neck out and say this year's winners will get more points than Fulham did last year.

Watford are going straight back up....
I think they looked dodgy at the back, but the keeper looks good.

Seems like they have some good footballers in Midfield and at the back but the decision-making/ tactical side of things looked very poor, a good side should be able to exploit that. The best decision any of their defenders made was when that lad went through on goal and he pulled him back, he had to take one for the team there, but it only happened because he switched off initially.

They have strength in depth - even if they lose Sarr. They are the consummate yo-yo team now. Too good for the Championship but struggle to attract the strength to keep them up in the EPL. Whilst I wasn’t that impressed with them in the second half in particular (did they muster an attempt on target in the 2nd half?) I think against lesser teams than Burnley who will also be up there I think they will find comfortable wins.

Seemed a funny season to me, hard to read just by points. There were quite a few good teams last year who were good enough to take points off anyone but were extremely hot and cold. A lot of teams were much better in one half of the season than the other.

I think the telling stat is that Fulham managed to bang in 106 goals and had a 63 goal difference, absolutely ruthless, most teams normally win it with 70-80 goals scored and a 30-45 GD.

Yeah I wasn't even counting Sarr, he's next level but probably won't stay. They're going to have some money to spend though if they do sell, as it will be 40m plus from him and Dennis. We need our players bought before they start splashing the cash.

I think some well-organised sides will take plenty of points off Watford, but they will likely be up there.

They were unquestionably the best team in the division last year, I don't want to take that away from them.

However, I don't believe goals scored or goal difference are the hallmarks of a quality side. Getting results in tight games is. Now 90 points is pretty good: you're definitely going up with that. However, I feel Fulham should have gotten more points with all that fire power. They could be flat track bullies at times. They'll need more tenacity in the PL.

Leicester 13/14 were the best championship side in the last decade. They scored 23 fewer, and had GD 23 less than Fulham. Yet thy won 4 more matches and got 12 more points. Fulham may still prosper in the PL, but I bet they won't have the success that Leicester side did with its ability to grind out results.

I'm not so sure, GD is a pretty good marker, especially when the league was quite strong last year, lots of good sides didn't even make the playoffs, and some were nowhere near.

Leicester were very, very good, no doubting that, they won the prem two years later and still had some of the same players in that side every week, like Schmeichel, Vardy, Drinkwater, Morgan, Mahrez, Knockaert etc. Don't think we can beat Fulham with the Leicester stick, and I can't remember how strong the championship was that year but last year it was stronger than average, I would say.

Fulham just had another level last year, and had some big away wins against some good sides. They were practically guaranteed promotion by mid-March after they battered a load of sides after Christmas, so they definitely took their foot off the gas towards the end.
