Warnock signing players from lesser teams!!

I’ve seen a few posts along the lines of Warnock is signing players from lesser clubs, who are therefore lesser players and therefore we won’t improve. Same sentiment as sign players from league 1 / bottom championship teams and that’s where you will end up!

And personally I think it’s a load of rubbish!

I think identifying players from teams lower in the pyramid than us is absolutely fine! Obviously Warnock has identified that those players have attributes that he believes we can use successfully and that they will compliment each other to form a successful team. The whole being greater than the sum of the parts and all that.

For example, look at Liverpool -
Robertson signed from relegation team Hull.
Winjaldum and Mane from bottom half team Newcastle and Southampton.
Even Firminho and Salah were signing for £30-40m (which isn’t really big money for a ‘top 6 club’). And look at the success they have had with those players.

Also Brentford, how many of their players were signed from lesser teams! And those same players have took them into the premier league!

In Warnock we trust👍👍

We'll see, it's a tough job picking decent players from lesser teams and building a promotion winning team to be fair he's done it before to a degree but already had some decent players in those squads, not sure we have a starting base.

McNair, Tav and Fry is a great building block. They are 3 superb players for this level.
Add to that list Watmore who was a superb free signing, Dijksteel and Bola who we must admit look like players under NW. I’d even go so far as to include Morsy and Howson. We’re not a million miles away from a very good team.

Big season ahead for Tav but I feel signing Crooks and (hopefully) Payero will do him good. Give him a bit more support than Saville did for example and, again hopefully, he won’t have to be the only one looking to create.

Entirely agree with OP . What shouldn’t be lost on us as well guys is we’re no great shakes now as a club like we were in those Robbo/Smac years .
Sounds cruel but it’s true as loads of the current players won’t remember those halcyon days as they’ll have been nippers .

I agree, Bola and Dijksteel have great potential and are now players Warnock trusts hugely. Watmore has been a tremendous free signing and a master stroke if we are honest. We have the nucleus of a good championship team, once Payero is confirmed and some defensive cover in that left centre back/left back role and some more options in forward areas and a goalie to compete with Lumley and we are good to go and I will be very happy with the squad.

That's better than making a Monk(ey) of himself.

Me too. It's an absolute joke. Same people will be claiming they spotted the potential before they signed if they do well.

We would all love to sign top players from the best clubs around the world. The truth is quite simple. If we had the money to buy players from PL teams or top European clubs, it would be for one of two reasons they would be completed
1. We were paying well over the odds
2. The selling club had decided they were surplus to their requirements.

A third scenario into the mix would suggest the player had a lack of ambition and was interested mainly in the money rather than project. (See Braithwaite)

Teams around our level don’t like selling to rivals unless the money is too good to reject, see Saville and Britt as examples

When you buy players from lesser teams they are far more likely to want to do well, be ambitious, test themselves at a higher level. They are the type more likely to give 100% effort. Yes they may not be consistent and have dips in form, but that is where the manager and coaches come in and earn their corn.

I want to get back to the days where we can take a Southgate, Ehiogu and Boateng from a Villa, or a Viduka from Leeds. Those days are a long way off. I think Warnock is building the foundations of a team to move us up a level. I am sure we will finish higher than last year. Is promotion likely, who knows, but all we can hope for is to keep moving forward and upwards. If it is in bite size chunks and it takes longer than this year so be it as long as we progress.

My biggest fear is that some fans are just waiting in the wings to criticise the best manager we have had since Karanka (due to a personal pre existing bias or misconception of the man himself) if we were to remain in this division next year. A new manager offers what exactly? Warnock really is our biggest asset right now.

I hear people say 'why are we signing players from relegated clubs?'. I presume infuring that they ain't very good.

It's absolute tosh (not sure why I used that word😂). It just means you can pick up better players who don't fancy league 1 and probably considerably cheaper than if you tried to sign them this time last year.

I imagine it's going to he no different to pep or Klopp. Some singing will work and some won't. The big difference is they ain't costing 7mil+ and sat on massive 4 year deals. I know Crooks got a 3yr one but the majority have been 2 years with an extra year. That means we can move them on in 2 years and the 'fees' paid mean little or no loss.

To think Monk spent 50mil in a summer window. It's mind boggling when you see us signing players for free or 750k.

The same people will bemoan the fact that Brentford etc can find a bargain and we can’t. You have to try the up and coming market to have a chance of succeeding. The Monk splash out got us nowhere except 30 million lighter.

We didn't have enough goals in the team last year. I don't think we've done anything to address that yet. Ameobi, and God forbid Holiet and/or Kadeem Harris will do nothing to address the goal scoring problems either. I'd rather just play Sivi.

The main criteria for a signing seems to be tall, and preferably played for Warnock before (along with cheap obviously). We have barely any attacking creativity, guile and pace currently. I'm hoping we know we've got a couple of loan signings lined up. But Warnock doesn't strike me as the sort to give a Premier League bright young thing a prominent role.

I have no issue with signing from lesser or lower teams, but we seem to be assembling a bang average side. Hopefully Warnock can get a tune out of them.

I do wish there was less talk of how amazing Warnock is at signing players and getting more out of them. If he's so great at it why didn't he do it last season?

I just don't understand people who have us up around the play-offs or even challenging for the automatic spots. If things go pretty well I'd guess 8th - 10th with squad and rumoured signings.

I'm still hopeful though, and after the last 18 months I can't wait to get back in the Riverside.

I don't care where the player comes from.
I care about his ability, potential, attitude and application.

We can't afford proven class and wont be able to until back in the Premier League.
So it is all about judgement, organisation and motivation.
I didn't think I'd be excited about any of our summer signings and I'm not.
But Warnock might create something out of this season's squad.
If not, then he hasn't left a legacy of **** like Monk and pulis did.

I would say he's building a side more in his 'image'. Everyone is a unit and been in and around the champo.

We could all see it wasn't a Warnock side last season. We were crying out for one or probably 2 target men and width. I think he's addressing this.

We were pretty weak against sides and often bullyed last year. I don't see that happing this season. I imagine a few more 'leaders' as well.

Just need a goal scoring CB to go 'full Warnock' 😂. Cardiff scored 21 goals from setplays when they were promoted. Think that says all.

Well we pushed the boat out for Assombalonga & Fletcher, it didn't work with those two, supposably signing from better teams yet as bad as we could have seen, rather have had Dave Currie & Gary Macdonald

These people usually also say, why can’t we pick up this stars from the lower leagues instead of paying a premium

boro fans, always been glass half empty
