Venues around Middlesbrough will double up as Warm Spaces this winter to help people get through the cost of living crisis.

Middlesbrough Council buildings including community hubs and the Live Well Centre are opening their doors for people to keep warm and find out about other help they may be entitled to.

With the price of energy and essentials such as food rocketing the Council is determined to make sure those most in need can access support.

The Warm Spaces will provide a place for people to chat in the warmth and access different advice.

Middlesbrough Mayor Andy Preston said: “There’s no escaping the fact this winter is going to be tough for lots of people.

“These Warm Spaces will welcome people indoors where they can come together for a chat away from the cold.

“At the same time we can get advice to people on benefits and other support that can help make things more comfortable.”

Central Library, the Live Well Centre and libraries and community hubs in Acklam, Easterside, Grove Hill, Hemlington, Newport, North Ormesby, Marton and Thorntree will all become Warm Spaces.

At different times they will also host advice and information sessions on a range of subjects including housing, affordable warmth, welfare rights, mental health and addiction support.

Individual venues will provide different levels of support. Full details, including opening times, are listed on the Council website

Private venues wishing to join the Warm Spaces network can contact livewellcentre@middlesbrough.gov.uk. The Council will be able to provide advice and materials to assist.

In addition to hosting Warm Spaces in its own buildings, the Council is also preparing a grant scheme to support independent community buildings to offer a similar service.
