Virgin Media off all afternoon accross Teesside

What fragrance said....
In Billog we have fibre cables on the existing telegraph poles and some new poles have been installed.

I've been doing a load of gaming (CoD) and not had any issues not having a static ip address. One thing I have had to do is to open a port for my laptop each time I connect as I connect using a company VPN - which wont connect without a designated port. No drama though.
I use a personal VPN when watching *cough footie on a saturday afternoon. This is just an app on my firestick or chromebook.
It depends on how things are set up in each game. It can cause Nat type moderate even with opened ports in some games, and cause communication issues apparently. Dynamic dns services don't work either, but I needed it anyway for my media server.

Some info here:

I dont understand a lot of what you just said...:D
But thanks for the link, I've learnt something new there.

No you have to pay £5 a month for it. You only need it if you do a lot of gaming or access things from outside the home a lot. Without it you don't have a unique ip address as they use CGNAT
How does having a static IP address effect my gaming? I genuinely don't know so would be interested to learn in layman's terms.

If I need to send data to you for a service I send it to you too address and a port so that may look I like this;

173.12.1.21:2000

That's easy with an ip address as it's unique to you. With cgnat many people will have that ip address so sending it to you is hard.

It's a bit like posting a letter to someone but not knowing their house number. Most services are fine but it creates some additional work to route it at the isp, just like Royal Mail have to knock on your door.

It doesn't mean you can't game, just that there can be problems.

For people like me that have media servers, or people with cctv that they access remotely etc, you'll def need static ip if isp uses cgnat

For vast majority of people won't need it and be fine

I'd also say that for me paying £5 a month for an ip is fine because it means I can download a 80gb Blu-ray in about 7 minutes and the upload is fast enough that I can and it to my mate at the same speed which is fun.

I negotiated a discount from youfibre anyway so was basically free to add it to the account

Armed with this new knowledge (I love the analogy!) ill keep an eye on performance with more deligence. No issues as yet.

I was a Virgin Media customer for 20 years until moving house last year. The new place didn't have Virgin services so I had to move to BT fearing the worst. The BT Broadband is far better than Virgin.

Fttp or fttc? I went from 300mb virgin (after being one of the first Comcast cable modem customers with the 0.5mb connections at launch) down to 76mb when we moved and it was awful. Dry fee technical issues but so dog slow going back to speeds like that. Imagine fttp is different entirely.

I'm not sure actually but can check and let you know.

When I do get full fibre installed would it be worth me looking into getting a static IP then as I do a lot of gaming on my spare time?

Try it without first and see how you get on, your isp may not even use cgnat and if they do you may bit even see any impact, they can add it quickly later

I've not had any issues without a static ip address in 4 weeks of gaming. But like Fragrance said, try without first and see how you get on. Getting it set up is a simple phone call.
