Viktor Gyokores

Like he's magically become 4 times better from playing in the Championship to the Spanish league. Mind boggles at transfer fees.

Portuguese league.

It's an odd one, because it's arguable whether it's even a step-up in quality.

I still don't understand why no Premier League teams were in for him, he was brilliant in the Championship and his fee wasn't particularly huge for the modern game.

It's like PL clubs have to sign players from established European clubs in order to appease fans / shareholders / owners / dodgy Oligarchs etc.

"£20m from Coventry........pffftttttt.......pass".

"£75m from Sporting Lisbon - get the chequebook out"

Mental 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

There's probably not much between the two leagues overall but if you consider the team he's playing for + UEL football I'd say he's operating at a higher level than previously.

I am still not convinced he will be prolific in the premier league and the money being talked about for him is crazy. I wonder if coventry have a sell on clause

And, a number of people on here didn’t want him thinking he’d have been a waste of money.
I don't think "waste of money" is a fair comment.

I think "couldn't afford him" would be more appropriate? Blowing your entire transfer budget on one player.....at the risk of him breaking his leg first game and missing the season.

Just out of our price range unfortunately......and would Coventry have sold him to "rival" 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

I thought they wanted £20m but we refused to pay it (either we didn't have it, or we didn't want to risk that sort of money on one player)?

and this was why Wilder threw his toys out the pram and moaned

I think Coventry from day one were pretty firm in wanting £20m + for him. Not sure whether Boro even put a bid in for him, or whether they asked how much, realised we couldn't afford him......then Wilder threw his toys under the bus.

Never, ever an affordable signing for us - even splitting the cost over 4/5 years? A £20m player isn't going to make a sideways move for £20k week - he'll be on £50k week + at Sporting Lisbon.

We could have signed him for £15m the summer before last.
It was a no brainer to do it.
Had he signed we would have gone up and in Gyokeres and Akpom had enough to stay up.
And then the budget to survive an thrive.

He was and is obvious quality.

I said at the time that 20 million is not like buying Assombalonga it's buying an investment asset that will go up. This is the model we hopefully deploying. We currently buying the likes of Fin Azaz Morgan Rogers, Silvera, Riley Mcgree hopefully they develop as players and we sell them on for over 10 million fees. Then once we get into the prem we can start buying 15 - 20 million players and sell them on for 80-100 million that is money ball.
