Viktor Gyökeres

This would make sense of he was at someone like Man City and could go to somewhere like Spurs/Everton/Newcastle but Gayle is a player who isn't going to enhance his reputation by playing well for Boro. He's already regarded as a player that is a very good championship player but not quite good enough so if he goes anywhere it'll be somewhere that either pays him what he's on now or gives him the chance to prove that he is a PL quality player. He's not going to earn another big move in the future, he's too old.

He's got very little to gain by taking a paycut to play championship football.
If he can't get a game for Newcastle, who have poor or constantly injured strikers, then he's not likely to get a game for another Prem Team, and no other Prem Team would give him the same wages, or a contract longer than two years. He's not in the same position as when he extended that last contract a year ago.

He's guaranteed £4m at Newcastle over the next two years, which will be hard to get him away from, but he may take £1m a year for two years from some champo club, plus Newcastle pay £1m for him to go and a £1m signing on fee. That would work out the same for Gayle and he gets to play (which I assume he wants to do) and could even have an automatic extension at year 3 and 4 if he plays a certain amount of games (which he would get if he's scoring 10-20 a season). It almost guarantees him a game/ wage in 3 years time at a good level, which could unlock the door on some other opportunities like a move abroad etc. This only applies if he still think's he'll be able to play that level mind, but if he doesn't he'll stay at the Mags until they pay him off to leave.

If he spends 2 years on the bench he would be in a worse position come year 3, and he might think he could play to 36 or more.

I wouldn’t be surprised if it was Newcastle to be honest. Wilson is their main forward this season. Gyokores would be an extremely cheap back up striker who could do a decent job. Yeh he’s not going to get them into the top 10, but for a sub striker it seems to make sense.

Remember when Chelsea signed the Boro keeper forgot his name? The young lad.

Also Liverpool bought our 3rd or 4th choice keeper a couple of years ago. As well as Brad Jones

All these were bought as back ups. Not necessarily mean they’re going to be starting them

Maybe he doesn't have the confidence in his own ability, he hasn't played proper football for 2 years(?).

If he was full of confidence, and convinced he's going to drop down a league and bang the goals in - your post makes total sense, he'll be better off.

However, if he leaves Newcastle and comes to the championship on a 1 year 20k/week contract and flops... There's the potential he could lose £2-3 million, because even if he stays at Newcastle until his contract runs out, "someone" will still end up signing him afterwards anyway.

Yeah, he might not do, so might just take the 4m and put his feet up, or he might think he cold drop down and re-prove himself at that level, and try and squeeze out more cash in total.

He wouldn't go for 1m for 1 year, unless Newcastle were going to pay him off 3m, which they just won't do.

He won't end up out of pocket by more than 25%/ £1m (so taking 3m instead of 4m) no matter what he does, but he might risk that £1m if he thinks it could get him a potential 6m total etc.

professional pride is something you might have when you're in a career spanning 40-50 years with a steady retirement pot. Probably fairly rare in an Industry where 99% of peoples earnings stop abruptly when they hit 35 or so and over 40% declare bankruptcy within 5 years.

Yeah they earn eye watering amounts but their lifestyle doesn't change because they've retired and they will have wives, girlfriends and families to provide for, sometimes for the next 50-60 years and any income post playing is likely to be chicken feed

Playing a few extra games of footy and appeasing fans of a club you have no connection with yet probably features pretty low on his priority list compared to providing the best possible future for his kids, partner and himself
Its abhorrent to give credence to the idea that a footballers life is short, implying they deserve ridiculous salaries to "provide" for their future.
The lads at British Steel Redcar found that their career was short too, as do millions of ordinary families and low paid workers in our country.
But no one is bleating for them.
The likes of Gayle may have to adapt their "lifestyle", but thats of no consequence - when normal families are attending foodbanks and people are being chucked on the dole.
No sympathy whatsoever with this "short career" nonsense.

[btw "ThatFragranceGuy" - my response is about the idea that footballers deserve huge salaries because their careers are short.
Nothing personal to you(y)]

But they aren't lads at British steel, or normal families using a foodbank, it's a bizarre comparison to make. He has a much higher earning potential and that isn't his fault, and doesn't mean he should take a huge pay cut because others don't have that same opportunity. They're lads that come into a great deal of money and often manage ur badly and go broke as a result of that money drying up.

No one says the deserve the salaries they get, but they do get them and those salaries find their lifestyle and the future of their children and it's a nonsense that anyone says they would miss out on a few million to go play for a club they have no affinity towards, rather than earning that cash and having it for their families security and their future life.

Its exactly because they are one of the privileged few that I have no sympathy whatsoever if they have to survive on a few £Million(s)
Get another job.
Join the real world.

I think hes a good player but I'm not sure he's as good as people are making him out to be. Last season was his best season by a long way and I think he was fortunate with a lot of his goals. The ones against blackpool, us, fulham (h & a), bristol city (h & a) all carried a lot of luck. Maybe I'm being hard on the lad but I dont see him as a £12m plus player.
I don’t think he is either, and we shouldn’t even be considered that kind of outlay as a championship club - been down that road before and paid the price heavily for it

Ref Gayle

Newcastle will want most of his wages paying - You are not going to get him for less than £30k/week.

I am sure we have had a close look at him.

He is 33 in October - its quite old nowadays for a striker.
