The EU has its faults but it and the EEC before as helped prevent wars between Germany and France, which we have often been dragged into at great cost in money and life. 75 years of peace is a great achievement and we have not let that Daily Mirror solder down.

Just reading for a second time a book called "The Mark of the Swastika" by Louis Hagen which was published in 1965 by Corgi books. I picked up for 75p at second hand book sale in 1987 and read it then. Its not available on Amazon at present, but it looks like its been republished in 2011 under a different title "Ein Volk, Ein Reich, Nine Lives under the Nazis".

Louis Hagen was well to do Jewish man who was brought up in Germany, but escaped in 1936 to the USA. His book is based on interviews he conducted with 9 German citizens who he knew in the 1930s when living in Germany, He interviewed them in 1947 and again briefly in 1963. They are from a range of backgrounds and a range of beliefs. He managed to get them to open up to him about what they thought and how their lives developed particularly during the period 1933 to 1947. Louis writes a short analysis after each individual's story. He particular focuses on what they thought throughout the period and appears to get very frank thoughts.
