VAR is appalling. Part 396: BHA v Liverpool

Ben White makes a wonderful tackle which the ref thinks is a foul worthy of a yellow.

VAR does a check to see if it should be red and sees that it is clearly a good tackle and not a foul.

Liverpool put the ball in the net from the free-kick (ruled out for offside, but not the point).

Ben White is now on a yellow for the final ten minutes with Brighton chasing the game.

Why, if they're doing a check anyway, can't the VAR official say to the ref that he got the foul wrong and restart with a drop-ball to BHA?

Utterly ridiculous.

And now the pundits are kicking off about a perfectly clear and obvious mistake from the ref (he didn't see Welbeck getting booted).

As would happen in rugby. Video technology is sensibly used by all sports except football

Referees will always do themselves out of the clean tackle debate by claiming overly agressive use of force to win the ball (i.e subjective)

The handball thing was bad enough, ball smashed at your arm and it's a penna, that's the one rule that seriously makes me hate modern football, followed closely by dives for penalties and
Dopey pundits constantly using the words 'there was contact' , insinuating that football is a non contact sport

It's applied as sensibly as it can be in football. The whole concept is detrimental to the enjoyment of the game.
I disgree with the first sentence. There are thousands of ways to implement it more sensibly. E.g. if the game is stopped for a check anyway then make sure the correct decision is made even if the ref has to rescind a yellow.

Just had the in studio ref talking utter b***ks about the "context of the game" whereby if the ref misses something that he SHOULD have seen then VAR shouldn't over-rule it. If that's the attitude amongst refs then no wonder we have problems.

If they're using VAR then it should be used fully and referees have to be seen as fallible.

I'm not suggesting they check every incident either - just if they do check then they need to return the correct result otherwise it's not just stupid, it's unfair.

The Danny Welbeck ones a stupid one in my opinion. Can players now just put there foot infront of peoples trying to kick a ball. Welbeck wasn’t getting the ball and therefore isn’t impeding

need the context to these things sometimes

I disagree completely scrote. Every goal is checked. Every goal celebrated has an axe hanging over it. To me that is unacceptable. I can't live in the moment and it alters my enjoyment of the game completely. Even watching two teams I have no investment in on match of the day, I see a 30 yard volley in the last minute, and am expecting that moment to be taken away.

To me you can not have a proper game of football with VAR checking every goal. And if you're not going to use it for the most important moment of the game why use it at all.

Referees make mistakes and they are as much part of the game as a striker missing a chance.

I think you've misread my comment. I hate VAR with a passion. It brings nothing to the game.

However, IF you're using it then you can't have a situation where there is a var check for a red card that shows the yellow card wasn't merited* without rescinding the yellow. It's unjust.

*there was no excessive force or loss of control either. White was more or less stood still with Jota running towards him.

VAR watch the game, play it back & still make a mistake, please bin it, unfortunately it's here to stay

What Sheriff said. Hate it, it ruins games.

The ONLY way I can think to implement it in football would be to make it challenge based so the coach or captain has perhaps two challenges per game. Challenge upheld and you keep it, challenge incorrectly and lose it. Watched the Liverpool game and there is no way that the Salah goal would have been challenged. Wellbeck challenge might have been given how late in the game it was.

Not a fan, I'd scrap the whole thing, but I'm sick of the woe is me from Liverpool and their fans.

Always whinging about something this season.

Yes. Cricket use it. Puts the onus on the teams to query decisions.

Just have a guy watching on TV to make sure the ref doesn’t drop any absolute clangers (Hand of God goal / Thierry Henry handball against Ireland etc).

And have a screen pitchside so if the ref wants to take another look at any particular incident, he can.

Make use of the technology, it doesn’t make sense to have instant replays for everyone watching and not the referee. But keep it simple!!

Possibly but we would soon be into ‘what’s an absolute clanger’
It was def a pen today and most refs would have missed it.
Its tricky
