Value for money Boro XI

What's the best value for money modern era Boro XI for you? Mine is probably as follows...

GK: Schwarzer (£1.2m)
LB: Dean Gordon (£900k)
RB: Luke Young (£2.5m)
CB: Big Nige (£500k)
CB: Dani Ayala (£375k)
LW: Downing (youth)
RW: Mendieta (free)
CM: Zenden (free)
CM: Ince (£1m)
ST: Nemeth (£1m)
ST: Slaven (£25k)


I appreciate there are many different ways to view this, for me it was about the transfer fees. I appreciate some of these players were on big salaries but that wasn't important to me at this point. RW was a bit of a struggle it's always been a problem position for us, hence Mendieta in there.

Still, not a bad line up for around £7,500,000 - or just over half an Afonso Alves.
 
Yeah Friend has got to be there. Absolute bargain and at the time we got a decent bit of money for Bennett and Friend was a vast Improvement . A great signing.
 
Honourable mention to George Friend who is undoubtedly one of the bargain buys of recent times. My reasoning for Dean Gordon was that he was still relatively cheap and played more games at a higher level and was excellent for us in the PL. His injury really destroyed his career to a large degree but he was immense for us and was excellent getting forward too.

Another excellent shout is Grant Leadbitter. Obviously we get him for free but the reason I chose Ince ahead of him was for similar reasons to why I chose Dean Gordon.

didn't we sign pally for some shinpads and training gear from synners?
 
What was Adomah? £1.5m? Surely that's your right wing problem solved. Although if you're discounting wages then Mendieta is absolutely in there.

Hasselbaink on a free surely?

You could probably just say the 86 team.
 
As said above the basis for any team would be the 86 regulars, as good as Friend has been was he better than Cooper ? Although I think Schwarzer was our best ever Keeper it’s arguable that he was better value than Pears or Platt. Also you have to take into account inflation, 40k for Souness seems a pittance now but at the time was a sizeable fee for an unproven player. The £4.5m we spent on Juninho could be seen as great value it’s a very hard metric to judge.

I think Branca is the player who *COULD* have been one of the best in our modern history. We all wished it had turned out differently for him and also for the club because I have no doubt he'd have scored plenty of goals for us and sadly the injury pretty much ended his career at a decent level.

I thought he cost us £1m though rather than free? May well be wrong of course, it has been known.

I would personally put big John before anyone, but that's just me though
Joking aside lots of posters could put 11 different players who they think are value for money, all about opinions

I think time just erodes our memories a little and we forget certain players. Since I started this thread I would definitely look to slightly change my bargain line up that's a fact.

If nothing else though it goes to show Boro aren't ALWAYS bad in the transfer market... just usually :ROFLMAO:
