Middlesbrough vs Stoke City preview

By Jamie Morris on March 13, 2021

Stoke City travel to Neil Warnock’s Middlesbrough on Saturday as the Potters attempt to push for a late playoff charge.
The Potters are currently ten points off the playoffs and a win could see them move into the top half but may be heading for a season of mid table mediocrity.
The Potters endured a comfortable 2-0 victory last time out after overcoming a stubborn Wycombe Wanderers as Rhys Norrington-Davies scored his first for the club and a Harry Souttar header rounded off proceedings.

The Home Side
The hosts are currently in ninth after suffering defeat in their last outing against Swansea City following on from a late Andre Ayew penalty.
Neil Warnock took charge at the end of the 2019/20 season and has steadied the ship which has saw Boro compete in the top half of the table for most of this season.
George Saville currently has the most goal involvements and has five registered strikes and has supplied for his teammates on four different occasions.

Form latest
The Potters have been on a mixed run of form as of late including three wins and three consecutive losses in their last six matches.
Meanwhile the hosts will be hoping to find more consistency in their upcoming games after earning three wins and one draw, but have also suffered two losses in their last six matches.
Both sides have found the ability to pick up wins but will be hoping to hit form at the right time to end the season well.

Injury latest
Norrington-Davies, Jordan Cousins and Sam Vokes are nursing knocks after picking up injuries in training this week and they will be assessed ahead of the game.
Long term absentees Nathan Collins and Tyrese Campbell are still facing a significant time out of action.

Prediction:
The Potters have picked up more wins in recent times, as they struggled for an elusive victory when going 11 matches without a victory during this season and will be wary of the threat an organised Boro side will pose.
This may end up being a draw as both sides won’t want to lose and the Potters are just about remaining in the hunt for the playoffs.

You never know.

But I think we're too far off now, even if we win the best we can do is stay 6 points off the play-offs.
We need a long winning run to have any chance.

Predicted Team news - will Assombalonga get a look in or start on the bench? Or not feature at all? With Fletcher out and Anfernee not likely to feature till next season, Neil might switch the team about.
We need to be off on the front foot.

Firstly, of course we can make the play-offs. I am still hopeful rather than expectant now. You would think Barnsley will win, but who knows. A win today, we could be 5 points of the play-offs with 10 games to go. We would have to better the teams around us by 0.5 points per game. That is a tall ask, and means we would, probably have to win about 7-8 of our remaining games. That is going to be tough with our heat setting screwed, one week hot, the next cold. However, if we can get a run going, who knows.

Thee are goals in the game today, 3-0 boro

We can't be 5 points off, the best we can get is 6 points off.

Barnsley play Bournemouth.

We're currently 8 points off 6th placed Barnsley, 6 points off 7th placed Bournemouth.

I'll be extremely disappointed if him and/or Akpom are even on the bench, but expect they will be
