Unai Emery

I haven’t seen a team dominate City like that for a long time. He’s got them playing some really good football with players who wouldn’t even get on City, Arsenal or Liverpool’s bench.

I have no affinity for Villa at all, but I really hope he gives them a solid few years instead of just a couple of seasons and then going to a basketcase club like Man Utd/Chelsea and underachieving there, like any manager is destined to. It is much healthier for a supposed top league to have clubs like Villa and Spurs making it a challenge towards the top.

Moreso when there is a real chance that things may shift this season and Arsenal/Liverpool both push ahead of Man City.

Think and hope he’s figured out that he’s one of those managers that’s absolutely brilliant at clubs around the top 5-10 range, but not cut out for the superclub jobs.

No shame in that. He’s doing such a brilliant job at Villa, and was absolutely fantastic at Sevilla & Villarreal, good at Valencia, bit of a disaster at PSG and Arsenal.

Easier to get players to buy in to what you’re doing when you’re at a level slightly below the elite egos.

Villa had 22 shots against City.

I've never known a Guardiola team concede that many chances to an opposition team.

Emery has Villa in the perfect system, style of play. Everything just seems to be clicking. But obviously not by chance, great manager.

Put Rodri in that City team and Aston Villa wouldn't have steamrolled them.

What Emery is doing is amazing though. I still can't believe they have him as their manager. It's similar to when Everton had Ancelotti. He is far far too good and big of a manager to be managing a team like Villa.

You see Utd with ETH, Chelsea with Poch, Newcastle with Howe....and Villa have Emery. It's crazy. The bloke has won huge trophies nearly everywhere he's gone.

Yes they do have a much poorer record when he doesn’t play.

It's a remarkable record.

4 defeats in 4 this season when Rodri has been unavailable.

Yet, they're unbeaten since around March/April when he starts.

He's by far their most important player. He does the job in midfield of 2 or 3 men.

By a clear distance the best CDM in the world and has been for over 2 years.

I still think Villa would've troubled them, as their home form, under Emery is amazing, but they wouldn't have got close to the stats and domination they had last night.

Another big game this weekend for Villa, against a virtually fully fit Arsenal (Timber/Tomiyasu/Partey aside).

It would be interesting to see if Rodri would have made a difference.

Either way that result adds to what is turning into a nicely competitive title race and top 6 race.
