LONDON (Reuters) - British transport minister Grant Shapps urged Britons and particularly hauliers on Sunday not to travel to ports in Kent in southern England after France said it would bar those coming from Britain for 48 hours from Sunday night.

Earlier on Sunday, several European countries began closing their doors to travellers from Britain after the country tightened restrictions in London and southern England to try to curb the spread of a new strain of COVID-19.

“Following the French government’s announcement it will not accept any passengers arriving from the UK for the next 48hrs, we’re asking the public and particularly hauliers not to travel to Kent ports or other routes to France,” Shapps said on Twitter.

“We expect significant disruption in the area.”

Damn it. I was planning on nipping down to Dover tomorrow
Looks like I'll have to do a bit of Christmas shopping and watch the darts instead.

“We expect significant disruption in the area.”

By that he means total gridlock with miles of articulated vehicles, including those carrying perishable goods in refridgeration units - going nowhere.
It will be the same in the other direction.

Perishable goods like fruit and vegetables from Holland and France will end up being dumped due to the delays.
Its not beyond the realms of common sense which tells us there may be less variety of certain fresh produce on the shelves.
We will have to deal with it.

This is not just about covid - its also about separation from Europe.

Road hauliers are faced with a mountain of official UK Govt paperwork to add to their work [from the start of next year due to Brexit] , which takes time and costs money. Inevitably that will cause delays as a matter of course and increase costs.

We know increased costs will be transferred along the supply - chain.
I think we better get used to it.

Trapped on Brexit Island while Johnson continues to carry out his cull. Great idea to blab about a mutant virus he's known about since September in order to deflect from his own ineptitude and so get us cut off from vital medical and food supplies. KIlling xmas indeed
