UK property hot spot close to Teesside!

I live in Richmond and am aware that property prices have soared.

1. It is mainly due to lack of supply. There are far fewer houses for sale than a year ago, or on average.
(I know the estate agent in the article very well - smashing lady). Most demand is from the south.
2. People know you don't have to live in a city anymore, at least for some and Richmondshire is a lovely place to live. There is more demand.
3. Commuting to Leeds is a piece of cake, despite being around 60 miles away, the motorway has really opened transport up. Newcastle is still a headache.
4. The Civil Service plan for Darlington will lift the value of all high end properties in the area, which drags everything else up.
4. The demand for holiday and second homes has soared, snapped up by cash laden southerners, but the impact on the communities they buy into is disastrous, especially up the dales. I wish they weren't allowed to buy, but this has extrapolated the house price growth more than anything else.

There are some amenities here and the schools and health service is very good here. There is still however a chronic shortage of good pubs and restaurants and retail is neither nowt nor something.
I fear for the tranquility when the inevitable upgrades in retail and hospitality come, as the traffic is already heavy and the parking is tough.
Staycations have transformed the town and both Swaledale and Wensleydale. You can't move and I don't see it changing anytime soon.

I'm lucky our house price will have appreciated, but it's not that that I appreciate most about Richmond.

Just looked and there are some decent 2 beds for £180k in Richmond that would be £300k in the South East or £130k in reasonable area of Teesside. Not as pricey as I thought they would be in Richmond.

Supply and demand. That's the root cause of all price action.
We have less supply and greater demand.

After you have figured that out then the next step is ask yourself why. The BBC will never tell you why. Just like they don't in that article. But it doesn't take Keynes to work it out All you bright FMTTM posters know why.

I live in a village not far away and not sure chronic is a fair word for the pubs and restaurants in Richmond.
If you're talking about fancy wine bar type places then yes but other than that there's a decent choice and enough for a proper pub crawl.

Rustique, the Thai (when it re-opens) Treasure Garden for Chinese, La Piazza and the Frenchgate are a good mix and choice and with the Heifer at Scorton, Wenslydale Heifer. the Black Bull at Moulton and the Coach House at Middleton Lodge there's some real top class eateries withion a short drive. We have a fantastic choice in the area.

I do agree with weekend congestion though and once the new retail park opens it will be utter chaos.

I really don't know where the staff will come from as well.

I'm about 10 miles from Richmond nearer Bedale where there is very little on offer in estate agents. All have sold. Pubs here are great but most cannot recruit staff so consequently not too much food on offer.
Could sell up at a good profit, but where could I buy?

They will have to commute from Teesside?

If the Richmond area, becomes more than 50% retired types and another 20% are really hybrid commuters to Leeds/Newcastle, 10% Armed forces, yes there is a very small pool of labour left for shops, pubs and restaurants. Higher education students are really 30 miles away.

Pesky foreigners crossing the channel to escape war and risk to life as caused by nations such as ours?

Evening zzzz didn't know you were localish.

I agree the Coach House and Black Bull are very good and the Scorton Heifer (on the Green) is decent, but they're a good drive out and the Wensleydale Heifer is outstanding (best in Yorkshire as voted recently) but is well over 15 miles away, as is Black Lion at East Witton, as is CB Inn up in Arkengarthdale past Reeth.
Rustique and La Piazza are ok, but all the ethnic restaurants are awful (Thai, Indians and Chinese) There is real opportunity.
Not been to Elixir yet.

But it is the pubs that are absolutely shocking.
Golden Lion, Talbot, Unicorn, Bishop Blaize, Town Hall, Ship, Buck are all tired and ropey.
Castle Tavern serves a good pint, Turf is ok and Spoons is what it is.
Fleece, Black Lion and King's Head are really more eateries.
Holly Hill is a yomp away.
You can do a proper pub crawl here, but it's in dire need of three or four really good pubs.
They will come, as will better restaurants.

I have a friend in Manchester who recently bought a cottage last year just outside Richmond and he bought it as an investment . He has it on AirBNB. I think he made a good decision it seems.

OK sorry you think it's shyte other than schools and healthcare.
Seems a lot of folk ploughing money into property there disagree.
There's a lot worse places with a lot worse nightlife for a very small town.
A lot of folk would swap you I suspect.

What are you on about?
Richmond is a fantastic little town in a spectacular setting with so very much going for it. It is also surrounded by the most fantastic scenery. I've lived here 23 years and absolutely love it.
I'm just honest enough to say it has poor pubs and not enough good restaurants for a town of its quality and potential.
You obviously don't even live in the town, so not sure why you are so agitated. Not sure how you could read into things what you did.

I like visiting Richmond - Green Howards Museum, little brewery, Castle, walk by the River, McKenzie Thorpe art gallery, indoor market, pretty stone buildings, the Georgian theatre But I am not sure I would like the live there. A bit small and built for the visitor and by the the sounds of it quite expensive now.
