U2 - Songs Of Surrender

I know there are a lot of U2 haters on here, but I am not one of them. I still occasionally play their 80s albums (and The Unforgettable Fire especially), so I was intrigued to listen to this new release of reworkings of their back catalogue.

Sadly, it's total dogshit. Supposedly an acoustic album, the aim seems to have been to strip all the hooks and best bits out of each track and to make them as morose as possible. I'd also go so far as to say Bono's voice sounds weak (never thought I'd say that about a U2 song) with the opening track "One" being a case in point.

If you want a fix of Bono, then try the excellent new Inhaler album instead (the lead singer is Bono's son).

I must confess I've recently enjoyed Bono's book "Surrender" which I didn't expect to. I haven't heard a positive word about the new album though. I remember first hearing them while at South Park Sixth Form and being quite blown away.

Ooh I went to South Park too. When were you there (a little earlier than me I guess if you discovered U2 there?)

Also interesting that you can say dogshit but not **** on here.

I was at Southpark in the early 80’s used to go in most of the local pubs same as the teachers

As a huge U2 fan I'm disappointed by this release. Definitely a case of jumping the shark. Bono's voice is too strong in the mix and sounds a bit Karaoke. The book, however, is pretty good. He's a decent writer.

I thought that I'd made it clear that U2 talk isn't permitted on this site. A dreadful band. He isn't even a real Bonio. My dog sniffed him once and he could tell straight away. He's got a really powerful snout. As for calling yourself 'The Edge'. Don't even get me started on how w@nky that is.

Big U2 fan, I didn't mind the album. Not entirely sure what the point of it is, but certainly didn't not enjoy listening to it. I quite like some of the stripped back versions.

Slightly off topic, but I also really enjoyed the stripped back album rework of Jagged Little Pill.

I do wonder if the purpose of the album was just to re-purpose the track 'Walk On' and now make it about Ukraine instead of Aung San Suu Kyi who went and dropped Bono right in it by allowing a load of genocide to happen on her watch. Slip it in amongst 39 other tracks and who can tell.

Also, there are new lyrics to Sunday Bloody Sunday.
