U-Turn on fees for NHS Migrant workers

How Johnson defended NHS surcharge for migrant care workers at PMQs yesterday
The No 10 U-turn marks a victory for Sir Keir Starmer. The Labour leader raised the issue at PMQs yesterday and challenged Boris Johnson to remove it for care workers. Johnson said he had “thought a great deal about this”, but he defended the arrangements.
Starmer said:
Every Thursday, we go out and clap for our carers. Many of them are risking their lives for the sake of all of us. Does the prime minister think it is right that careworkers coming from abroad and working on our frontline should have to pay a surcharge of hundreds, sometimes thousands of pounds to use the NHS themselves?
And Johnson replied:
I have thought a great deal about this, and I accept and understand the difficulties faced by our amazing NHS staff. Like [Starmer] I have been a personal beneficiary of carers who have come from abroad and frankly saved my life. I know exactly the importance of what he asks.
On the other hand, we must look at the realities. This is a great national service—it is a national institution—that needs funding, and those contributions help us to raise about £900m. It is very difficult in the current circumstances to find alternative sources, so with great respect for [Starmer’s] point, I think it is the right way forward.

I struggle to understand why anybody would think it's ok to charge someone twice, NHS worker or not. Seems a bit unfair to me.

well done labour, shamed the tories into doing the rigjt thing, as u have said before johnson is a reactive PM rather than a proactive

Tells its own story. Can't say I'm surprised.

Nothing to do with Brexit, why bring it up when a large majority of the foreign health workers are not EU citizens. Boris was shown the error of his way in this matter by many Tories as well as Labour and reacted accordingly. A good result for democracy. Well done Mr Starmer. (I am a Labour voter BTW so have no interest in cheering this government).

I didnt the article did.
Brexit has never interested me.

The government reconsiders the issue after representations and changes it's stance. Representations from his own party and Mr Starmer - bless him - good example of a democratic process. Rightly challenged and brought to the forefront.

Shame all you LWDBs to find it something to get overly excited about rather than recognise a willingness to change after reflection;

shamed into doing it
victory for labour
nasty party forced into compassion

some of it may be true, such is the nature of politics but rather than applaud the decision you continue to mutter your vitriol and wallow in your self righteous indignation. What a boring repetitive bunch of chunts.

Back to "this lady is not for turning" days 😄

Do you think this has come because Newsnight ripped too shreds the £900 figure Boris quoted in PMQ. They showed that the figures was four years payments and questioned whether Boris had any idea about this.
He is rapidly becoming an embarrassment. Nick Watt quoted that a Tory MP said on the phone late last night "release the dogs of war" whatever that means.

'Some of it may be true'

Which some of it?

Shamed into doing it?

Neither Johnson nor the Government get any applause from me but the people/organisations who 'shamed' them and 'forced' them do.

Millbrook, bless him, with his inability to see what just happened. Shame on LWDBs, whatever that means, for appreciating that an unfair policy has been partially reversed due to pressure from compassionate people.

Must have just been a coincidence that it was supported by vote leave supporters then :sneaky:
