Lyon in talks with Liverpool over £8m-rated midfielder transfer
L’Équipe reports, Lyon have already reached personal terms with Morton, but Liverpool’s asking price of €9 million, excluding bonuses, is proving a stumbling block.

Bearing in mind he was a team mate of Hackney in the u21 and played in the final that price seems very cheap. We enquired about him in January

I read he is out of contract in June 2026

I'm surprised (and hopeful) about the low fee being mentioned. I think we would be able to stretch to that with Hackney money at which point it comes down to whether Morton is prepared to step down to the Championship. Young UK players have started doing a lot better playing in the top tier abroad so it wouldn't surprise me if he went that way.

Sell Hackney for £20m and bring in Morton for £8m would seem a phenomenal piece of business. I suspect very little of that has any truth behind it. For one I could not see us being able to afford Morton's salary

He looks better than Hackney when I watch the Under 21s.

To be honest we could pay him say £35k/week and easily double his fee in 12 months if he played regularly in the Championship. Offer Liverpool £8m and a 25% sell on profit clause. Offer the player a £20m trigger clause. That such keep everyone happy.

Morton has apparently agreed terms with Lyon with the Liverpool asking £7.8m excluding bonuses.. would be a very interesting move for us.. I think we offered a £10m deal in January.. I think there’s been flights from Lyon to Teesside and from Liverpool.. on very recently. Talk of a big transfer fee coming up our end could be that.. Lyon have had their relegation to Ligue 2 overturned.. and it looks like they will be playing in the Europa league this season. Who knows? I would have thought he would have joined in January if he was coming.. might have been one earmarked for if we had been promoted?

I would genuinely rather us go for Alex Robertson from Cardiff.
I ran a comparison of him vs Tyler Morton on McLachApp. Robertson's defensively stronger but Morton's better at through balls. From what we've seen so far, it does look Robertson would be fine for EdBall. I think the main issue with either of them is youth and inconsistency. As it stands, our midfield consists of Morris, McCabe and Kante who haven't even played 40 Championship games between them. Players at this point of the career tend to be quite inconsistent. I think you need an experienced Championship pro to add to those three who you can rely on to hit a certain standard even if not playing week in-week out.
