Two very good Boro managers who could spot talent, Stan Anderson & Willie Maddren

IMHO, as good as any manager we've had at our football club when looking for potential, exciting players to take us forward,

IMHO I think so, to name a few:-
Stan Andersons time, Jim Platt, John Craggs, Stuey Boam, John Hickton, special mention to Hugh Mcllmoyle

Willie Maddren, brought in Stephen Pears, Brian Laws, Gary Pallister, Bernie Slaven, Archie Stephens, special mention to Gary Rowell, a very good striker & oh nearly forgot, WM's best signing, Bruce Rioch

But I do look through rose tinted glasses mind 😏👍

For Stan Anderson you missed Graeme Souness. Easily overlooked, I know :)

Not Rose tinted at all. Some truly fantastic signings, a little different to our current recruiting!!
As for my favourite - I’d have to go for for Big John. Signed as a defender, and on his debut scores a pen and a ‘star was born’

And his 22nd birthday too, my all time favourite Boro player, whose 5 foot 5 cardboard cutout currently resides in the back room

Ref Stan Anderson signings - not many duds too - Stiles was at the end of his career. Johnny Vincent didn't take off as hoped.

Willie had little cash when he got a bit in 1985 - they were all decent quality - Rowell could still finish, Slaven took a while to settle in, Stephens was getting on but good in the air, Pears became England B, Laws sold for a profit. I was surprised we struggled as much as we did in 1985/6 the squad was improved from 1984/5.

Stan clearly had an eye for talent. Willie was a superb appointment at the time he was appointed, we may not have appreciated it in real time, but he did for Rioch what Stan did for Big Jack. They never got the full recognition for recruitment that they really deserved (in their time or since tbf) but fans, as we know can often be fickle In the moment and experts in hindsight.

Morning Erimus, I would throw another name into the ring- John Neal. Maybe not as many but did sign some decent players - Cochran’s and Burns too the list. And of course, Bosco (RIP)

Morning Nosmo-king, I was thinking of JN when starting the thread but by the time he left, as he was aware of Charlie Amers sell policy, there wasn't much to hand over to Bobby Murdoch
