Turkey has had 2017 deaths out of its 82m population, it gives its citizens 5 free face masks each week and a free bottle of hand sanitizer per home every week.

Over Easter weekend 250000 items of donated PPE were flown into RAF Brize Norton by the Turkish Air Force.

Now we're getting another 84 tonnes of PPE from Turkey

Embarrassing given how Johnson, Gove and co have used the Turks as a political football

Face masks have little benefit . . . . apparently.

Seems most other countries had the foresight to get PPE and face masks sorted before it all kicked off - us on the other hand didn’t

It was put to the panel yesterday that our epidemic PPE stocks were run down prior to the outbreak. No answer was given to that question.

Turkey is among the top 10 countries in the world when it comes to confirmed coronavirus cases, and its toll is increasing by more than 4,000 cases per day. And the mortality rate has been much lower here than elsewhere -- which has raised eyebrows.
The Turkish Medical Association (TMA) says Turkey's official coronavirus death statistics do not include cases that strongly indicate Covid-19 but test negative.
"Doctors that belong to our association have reported that even those CT scans and/or clinical findings indicate the disease, if PCR test results are not positive, if the patient dies they are not recorded as Covid-19," the TMA said in their report. CT scans are imaging tests, while PCR tests are used to detect the RNA of the virus.

And Turkey uses the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine and favipiravir, a Japanese antiviral, much earlier than other countries in the onset of Covid-19, Koca says.
But Lancaster University's Dr. Munir is one of many medical experts who opposes the use of the malaria drug.
He said the risk of the side effects outweighs any benefit that using hydroxychloroquine may have.
"Treatments have very little impact," he explained. "When it comes to hydroxychloroquine, the patients might have recovered from Covid-19 anyway, but after a year they might see heart problems coming back, that blindness is appearing. This is why there isn't enough evidence to approve these drugs on a mass scale."
Just to add they have flown PPE to Italy and Spain too. Not solely the UK

I do worry for Turkey. Istanbul especially. Although they do have a superb health system, Istanbul is a colossal city (in excess of 17m people) with a fair degree of poverty and cramped living conditions. They are also, culturally, prone to having multi-generational households. I became very fond of the Turks last year. I spent a month filming there for Nat Geo ... from the Armenian border, along the Iranian/Syrian borders to the adriatic and Istanbul. In general, lovely people.

Compaing death rates between any two countries is pointless because all have different criteria for collecting the data.

I know you were Bear, the 'apparently' give it away. (y) I was having a dig at the politicians who keep repeating the mantra of 'were listening to the science,' Wish they would listen to commonsense sometimes.

Their new cases have been falling since 10 Apr and their deaths have flattened. No surge has happened.

Nothing about surge or PPE. This thread started saying how well they have done. Literally the same day New York Times reveal they have been way under reporting their deaths. Also states all countries are trying to under report. Stop comparing country to country or using one to beat the UK with when you have no idea how they are reporting their figures. Clearly Turkey have under reported

You clearly missed the unexplained UK deaths from ONS last Tuesday and Whitty extremely concerned about 2500 additional deaths in a week. Perhaps Turkey and the UK use the same counting methodology. Most of the countries with larger death rates, except France (and possibly the US), are underreporting.
