Truss Defends Profiteering Over People In Desperate Need

The windfall tax thing is a bit of a red herring. We don't need a windfall tax. The important thing is that the government help people. The massive profits are already taxed substantially and we pay tax on all of our massive bills. The treasury must be swimming in cash with all the extra tax they'll have taken this year from energy companies, bills and petrol/diesel taxes. The government can just help people properly by announcing more assistance or fixing the cap much lower.

The extra money from a windfall tax would be a bonus but the assistance they are going to provide should be the priority. I don't care where the money comes from, as long as the help is there. I'd like the focus to be on that instead of how we could fund it.

The windfall tax is a big lie. The tories told us it was 15 billion. They did take 15 billion then handed 10 billion back in tax cuts. They assume, correctly, that the electorate don't look very closely.

As you say they are not a sustainable answer, legislation would be, I dunno, in the form of price caps, for example.

We have the very worst people in charge at the most desperate of times. Global peace and security at risk, climate change spiralling, cost of living crisis, Russian interference, open corruption in the age of misinformation ….. and we’ve got some pound shop Thatcher tribute act playing dressie-up for her instagram account every other day, likely to be in charge of our response to the lot!
l’ve never been more afraid of the future, particularly for my kids. What on earth kind of country are they going to grow up in?
Great post and sums her up perfectly.
The sociopathic aspect though is her mindset on profits for the likes of bp and shell and brazenly stating that their profits mean more than a people crisis.
They talk about patriotism. She’s a traitor to her own people protecting these massive profits.
It’s disgusting, even if she uturns on it….you all know what she really thinks….

Agreed but the funding of supporting people could be substantially paid for by maximising a windfall tax through this year as they continue to benefit.
Any shortfall is then borrowed by the government.

They made no profits in those years in the UK. We wouldn't be able to windfall tax any profits this year if it was the same. The excessive profits they have made this year is taxable in the UK (at 40% instead of the usual corporation tax rate of 19%).

I know these companies are dodgy in the way they account but fixing that isn't what is being proposed via a windfall. To be honest, that would be a far better conversation to be having than a talking about a one-off windfall. It is preposterous that year on year these ridiculously profitable companies are subsidised by more than they pay back in tax.

This is the problem with this conversation though. The focus should be on the help first, not the source of the help.

If they made no profits where did the £44 billion come from to pay shareholders?

More complex than that, when great swathes of the total capital or in the hands of the view, and that is increasing, then it leaves little for the rest of us, that in itself drives inflation up and that'll kill people. You have to address the runaway profiteering, you have to bring a bit more balance otherwise we pay for them to be billionaires. London has more billionaires than any city in the world, only two countries have more billionaires than us.

Whilst truss isn't very bright she is, currently, playing to a very small audience. She may well be lying to get into no 10. My main worry is, she is a puppet of the erg and gained their support by promising the unthinkable, activating the ni bill. This is something even Johnson avoided.
Shes going make Thatcher look like Fidel Castro.
Our only hope is the party rebel against her. Don't hold your breath
Shes capable of starting WW3 all by herself

Well, what did anyone really expect?

This woman is a dangerous airhead.

Straight from BJ's playbook.

One day they might learn, but it's not going to be anytime soon.

Thankfully if she carries on the torch from the previous clown, it will all be over in just over a couple of years. It's going to be a **** two years mind.

Hopefully, people remember things like this when it comes to voting in the next election. The bigger the defeat which is inflicted on the Tories the more they will have to tame this crap down, when they inevitably get voted in again, later down the line.

Now she’s saying that the civil service is woke and straying into anti-semitism. Erm, how does that work. Has she ever made a speech without using the word woke. Think she could be more dangerous than BJ and that’s saying something

She clearly, along with the rest of her bigoted ilk, has no idea what woke means. It's possible she's being honest as she probably would prefer the civil service to be unaware of racial justice issues.

I would hope the Civil Service is woke. Be a bit concerning if it wasn't.

she won't last two years, she'll have a series of "gaffs", that will then become a crisis and the cost of living crisis and economic collapse will union with her "gaffs" and she'll be ejected either through an early GE or through a leadership challenge. The Tories are the political equivalent of Watford when it comes to leaders.
