Truss Defends Profiteering Over People In Desperate Need

i dont like the idea of a windfall tax if its classed as one off tax on good fortune. We need long term tax measures to claw back the billions these energy companies have stollen from the uk.

When companies operate across the globe they use accounting practices to allow them to pay the least tax possible, which is their right, most people would do the same. It is however morally wrong.

If she screws up as much as BJ then it would be completely irrecoverable, and we'll have been through pretty much all the options they have from their MP's. They need to get shot of the lot of them, and start from scratch as the road they're going down clearly doesn't work, for the UK, or even for the Tory's credibility (not that they have any left, or have ever had more than Labour).

To me this situation gives us the excuse to re-nationalise. Of course the "Greed-Is-Good" party would never contemplate that. However, the use of a windfall tax is entirely justified in this case. Their profits have jumped not because of any work or initiative by the companies, simply by seeing the jump in fuel costs which consequently gives them an inflated profit result. To be fair some of the companies have stated that they have no mechanism to invest this windfall in green or other initiatives so they simply pass the profits to their shareholders. Of course those self same shareholders are Tory voters with their snouts in the troughs to greater or lesser degrees...

Another reason to ask why anyone who is not a multi-millionaire would vote Tory?

If they have paid no tax in the UK but paid a lot in Norway then it probably isn't due to dodgy accounting practices because I'm pretty sure corporate tax for energy companies in Norway is higher than the UK. If anything that would encourage them to shift profits from Norway to the UK if possible. However, Norway might simply have a method of charging tax which is more difficult to offset. I assume they have no profits here because they are investing so costs are higher than income and using the costs associated with decommissioning, which they are subsidised for as a cost when those costs should probably be excluded from their calculations.

Sadly it's not only their right, it's the law, financial standards say you must try and maximise returns as much as possible.

Woke is just another buzz word to mean bad. Call anything they don’t like woke and their elderly members think it’s bad.
The amount of times I’ve heard her use the defence “project fear” as though it in itself actually means anything is crazy.

Shell haven't paid tax in 3 years (up to 2021), don't expect them to start now. Something's not right, whatever it is, and it needs sorting out.

I think we actually subsidised them by £100m-£700m, depending on what you read.
 
If you renationalise the retail side of the energy market not much will change. The gas produced in the North Sea should be sold to the UK at cost. That would bring prices down and stop us being so affected by the fluctuations in the international pricing of gas.
 
We are making the same mistakes with renewables as we have done with fossil fuel based energy sources. The renewable sector should be the place to set straight and restructure the uk energy market to serve the citizens of the uk and untie us from foreign profiteering, however only 7.3% of UK offshore wind is owned by UK entities. why are we letting foreign capitalists make profit from the wind on our shores.

I've said it before and I'll repeat. The use of woke as a pejorative is simply an attempt to undermine the concept of empathy and part of an overarching divide and conquer strategy. There's a name for people who don't understand or value the concept of empathy, psychopaths.
