Members of Erimus Rotary this week completed planting one and a half miles of native deciduous trees alongside the Tees upriver of Teessaurus Park toward the Newport Bridge.

Tees Trees , planted to commemorate the Centenary of Middlesbrough’s oldest rotary club recognise Rotary’s century of giving to the town in many different guises.

A fortunate piece of timing will mean that the young saplings mostly around 2-3 metres tall will be on hand to greet participants in the inaugural ‘Tees Heritage Walk’ on Sunday May 14th, the last day of ‘Coronation Week’

Five local Rotary clubs are working together in a first for Teesside which will enable local people to view a ‘greening’ riverscape on a family walk. Participants can learn of the riverbanks world changing industrial past whilst also raising funds for their chosen charity.

Middlesbrough College students have been deeply involved in the walk preparations, designing the walk logo , preparing signage showcasing various heritage points along the walk and assisting with tree planting.

President of Erimus Rotary Geoff Taylor himself a former Tees Bay pilot was delighted to welcome the changing riverbank scene “Many local people will be very pleasantly surprised at how much the area has improved in recent years and Rotary is very proud to have played our part. We would like to see hundreds of local people join us in a Tees based fundraiser which celebrates our heritage but also signals a better greener future” .
Stephen Donnison head of teaching at Middlesbrough College shared the enthusiasm of the partnership which bridges a generation gap-“Our students gain a real advantage by participating in a real world event, its been extremely positive to work on a project which has the potential to deliver long term benefits to our town and its people”.
Former Mayor Dave Budd, now a member of Erimus Rotary added his enthusiasm for staging the walk-" There are so many families in the town who remember when the upriver Tees had a much grimier face. With new factories developing environmentally friendly products and solutions and a Green Travel route beside them the Tees Heritage Walk can showcase a positive message about our town and raise a lot of money for local charities".
