TransPennine nationalised

Over priced almost £50 to go to Leeds, no seats beyond York and chucked off in Northallerton waiting 2hours for a connection.

Not fit for purpose.
And that is exactly why they have lost the contract.

Not sure what we do with train fares, that is a different argument altogether. When we to Eindhoven we stayed in Nijmegen and got the train over on the morning. The return train fare for a walk-up price was 37€, can you imagine what it would have cost in this country?

I rarely get the train to work even though it would be really convenient. Costs me £8 one way or £10 return. It's hardly any distance, 3 stops on a slow train and a 20 minute journey. It's far cheaper to drive so that's what I do. I had to go to London recently for work. That was £300 for a return ticket. The prices are just preposterous. I don't think there is a single journey you can make anymore where the train is the best option. It's almost always cheaper and quicker to drive and if there are 2 or more people travelling even more so.

It's criminal the state of the public transport in this country (outside of London). Every single other country I have been to has had a better service and been cheaper and it's not even marginal. It's always massively better, runs on time and is cheaper.

I get the train all the time back to the local area (Well Northallerton) from London as I live down here, and don't really have much of an issue with the east coast main line. 2hrs 20min, and never pay more than £70 return. Its once you get past York and start using trains that only service the North its a complete shambles, like nobody cares. Its even cheaper going from London to the Midlands, can get it about £13 each way. The west coast mainline is the biggest rip off of them all though, always stupidly expensive trains, and always over crowded.

See it all the time when waiting at Northallerton, TPE trains cancelled and advising people to use the LNER services to York and change, never like booking trains when you need to use TPE also as a connection, even if its cheaper, as they never show up, or are always late, so you end up missing the main

That's the main problem, as a conductor I know told me, the stupid rostering of staff.
If one person doesn't turn up it falls apart.
It would more sense if a driver and conductor worked from Newcastle to Liverpool and back, Scarborough to Manchester and return etc..
That's basically a shift and the train gets there and back, but that's too simple.
We have enough staff in Scarborough to run a proper service but we get cancellations all the time with no alternative service.
They've probably been told to sit around for a few hours like they have in Cleethorpes whilst the company hides behind "a short notice change to the timetable".

Goodbye, you won't be missed.

TPE goes to Saltburn now, same as Northern.
This is ridiculous. We don't want main line operators running all the way to places like Redcar, Saltburn, Billingham etc. It kills the service. Nothing wrong with having to change to local trains to get to small demand locations, it just needs to be organised correctly and bus services integrated to suit

Surely we're not so stupid a nation that this can't be done, the rest of Europe manages?

I think it is brilliant for the region that it runs to Saltburn and Redcar. My mates from Leeds love having family day trips to Saltburn. A place never visited before.

Also I have previously worked in Leeds and York and a direct link is fantastic.

It's not about being brilliant for the region, it's about getting a train service between the main towns.

Your mates from Leeds could always get to Saltburn by train, like the rest of us.

Believe the train going to Saltburn solves a bit of operational problem of the train having to idle on the Whitby line, whilst waiting to make the return leg. Now it adds some extra capacity going east and means the whitby line is not blocked.

They sit at Saltburn for an extended period now so that all fits.

Any enhanced connectivity for our area is a bonus. However, the service needs to be reliable and TPE have never really provided that.

The last three journeys I made with them all had my trains cancelled and so they became a free for all across all train companies to get to my destinations.

I travel from Boro to Leeds quite regularly using TPE, missed a few meetings due to short notice cancellations, costs around £45 for return tickets, £63 for an open return, which is extortion, also over the last couple of months, they seem to have reduced from 5 carriages to 3 carriages, very poor, pricey and unreliable service.

I work for a company in Leeds and have to go once or twice a week to the office. Would never consider the train at £40+ return a trip. Just drive everytime.

It's a shame the Transpennine is so crap because on paper it's a great service for me now. A train direct from Saltburn to York or Manchester airport. I've used it quite a few times to go to/from Manchester airport but reckon 50% of my trips have been a **** show. I'd never rely on it to get me there just in time for a flight.

Always dread relying on transpennine for away games.
Services cancelled on a Saturday morning without fail.
Lucky if one toilet is operational on the return.
