Transfers Over The Years

There's been a number of discussions recently about our transfer policy/successes recently. I was discussing it with a mate of mine. He is a Man United fan and has a fondness for Boro since Robson came to us in the 90's. Anyway he put together this which includes the players who have transferred in not including loans or free transfers. There are 51 players that we have bought since 2013/3014 not including the current season. The players in cold I have not decided on whether they have been a success or not as it is either too early to say or I simply cannot recall them playing for us.

He got the names and fees from Transfermarket and the fees are in Euros. It won't be 100% accurate in terms of fees, however, its pretty comprehensive. Based on transfer value in and out and the level of performance we received from the players, I reckon 53% have been a success or 24 out of 45.

Thoughts?

Looks like we've always had that 'buy low sell high' thing going on.

Or maybe not.

I think Fergie said if 7 out of 10 signings turn out to be successes, you're doing very well.

I do wonder what the success rate would be if a complete pin sticker was in charge of recruitment. 1 in 10, 1 in 20? I know someone will say it's whatever our current success rate is!

I think we've gone young and hedged our bets this summer. You'd only really need one of Rodgers / Rav or Silvera to come good and we'd be 'quids in'. I really think we have a right player in Rav. We've hardly seen him at CB yet.

I think the model has been much improved over the last year or so. The likes of Mcgree and Forss are cracking signings at a decent age. Crooks was a bargain at 1mil.

Thank feck we've moved on from paying 7mil for the likes of Fletcher / Saville and Flint. 21mil alone on those 3. Think we got a couple of mil back (at best).

I heard someone say recently Hackney will become our first ever £20m plus transfer fee received, but you’ve got Adama there as £20m, did he go for that much?

I think success can be measured on a sliding scale.

Some might leave for less than they signed, or even on a free, but of they've played regularly then that is the low bar to qualify for me.

Of the new signings RVD is probably the only one who looks to have huge potential at this stage but what a find he was.

Hackney, Mcgree, Fry possibly Forss likely go for big money at some stage. Problem then is can we replace them, a summer like this one if we loose two of our best players would cause real trouble

In that list I worked out 25 out of 51 of those were liked and would be seen as somewhat of a good signing in my views.
1 in 2? Just under

I guess it doesn't come under transfers, but if you talk about recruitment, you have to include freebies.

Lenihan, Watmore and Ramirez I'd consider successes. Ok, Ramirez played his best football on Lian, but we made a big profit on him.

Then there's Sami Ameobi....

On the whole, I'd say we've done ok with frees. I guess Grant was just before this timeframe?

That accords with what my mate mentioned. That said, in the MEN they gave 67 out of 105 a success out of Ferguson's signings. Given the budget at his disposal over the years, I'm not sure that's a success.

I think it makes us question what success is, and what counts as success. Is getting 8 or 9/10 right an unrealistic expectation given the large degree of risk and uncertainty when signing a player?

And I don't think having a big budget makes it easier. It raises the stakes: a bad signing can cost 10s of millions if you're making top end signings.

It also narrows the window of success. Signing a player good enough for the top 3 probably wasn't good enough for Man U at that time. Likewise, Chelsea's signing will probably finish top half, but anything less than the CL will be a disastrous failure given the amount they've spent.

I agree that you probably only need one or two to be a success in terms of business but we need more than one or two to be successful if we have promotion ambitions over the next couple of seasons.
