Trade Deal with Japan

Didn't we have a free trade deal with Japan via the EU? And we still have to pay tariffs on some goods coming into the UK i.e. car parts which we don't currently have to pay as part of the EU. I may be wrong on this mind so don't take it as gospel, but if I am right in my understanding we are effectively celebrating having to pay more for some imports from Japan than we currently do.

WeeGord the EU have a bilateral free trade deal with japan that was signed in 2018 as I recall, so yes you are right, though I am not sure you can necessarily compare one deal with the other without looking at the detail, not everything with Japan - EU is free. Has the UK negotiating powerhouse managed to get a better deal than the EU? You wouldn't think so, but I don't know the details and I believe Japan have said they won't sign anything till the spat with the EU is sorted, Japan may be better leveraging the EU's deal with the UK rather than signing their own, I suppose is the thought process there.

We have to look forward as the deals you mention are no longer relevant.

Hahahaha!

I'd say an economy based on them is.

But that aside - if we don't want to examine how our diminished situation came about, then how will we ever make anything better?

The article seems quite positive, however mainly quotes from the gvt so they would say it is positive. Without seeing the details I guess it’s too early to comment.

According to the Government's own forecast the new deal will boost GDP by £1.5bn, or 0.07%:

That's distinctly underwhelming, so to liven it up here's The House That Heaven Built by Japandroids (see what I did there):

What else are we going to do ? Not sign a deal?

Look back misty eyed at the old deal we had by the sounds of it. Not sure some realise that staying in the EU is not an option therefore that deal we had, is gone and not coming back

So, what you're saying is we've trashed a good deal and now have nothing so what we've got with the new deal is now better than nothing because you can't have the one we've trashed, which was better.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

It's not bad news, whatever you think about it. It appears to basically rollover what we had with Japan as part of the EU's deal, but with some extra's. How beneficial these extra's are and what we have given away to get them isn't known yet. But the 0.07% benefit is compared to no deal with Japan, not what we would have had via the EU.

We could always rejoin. Only one side of this debate has ever been scared of a second go around.

We could if they'd have us. If you were in their shoes you'd think at least twice. What's to stop us doing it all over again? And if we did we'd have to join the Euro (as far as I know) and we've also lost all those concessions and rebates, they're gone for good. Great job. As Trump would no doubt say.

Scared?
Why would we need a second vote, we haven’t even enacted the first one. I’m sure if remain had won the referendum by the same result you wouldn’t chomping at the bit shouting “let’s do it again”

That would have been it. If we win tonight I doubt we’d offer to scratch the result and play tomorrow just for the craic
