Trade deal done then

Apart from the fine detail.
Well done NZ. It won’t be trumpeted as much here because it benefits New Zealand much more.

“the New Zealand deal itself is unlikely to boost UK growth, according to the government's own estimates.

Labour and the National Farmers Union (NFU) said that it could hurt UK farmers and lower food standards.”

“However, the deal is not likely to increase UK economic growth - or GDP - according to the UK government's own assessments. New Zealand will fare slightly better as it may be able to sell more lamb to the UK.”

Yes, it does look like we will get the best of the deal.

Shame they couldn't get the working visa's sorted. My youngest daughter is moving back to the UK in 6 weeks time, and the amount of money shelled out by her partner for NHS cover, visa etc is amazing. Anybody who thinks that the NHS has 'treatment tourists' who get treated for free need to think again (although I knew that already as my better half is a nurse, worked in the NHS for year before moving here)

Why are they coming back here next month? We are heading into a bit of a bleak winter with Covid infection rates rising to 100,000 a day and your summer is just commencing.

To live, we left when she was 9 and, the few times we have been back, she's loved it (bit like me she loves Christmas & the cooler weather) and its always been home to her. Living in London for a bit with her partner, then see where the fancy takes her. No plans to come back here any time soon, atm. She also misses her aunties & uncles, and wants to spend some time with her surviving grandma while she can.
We'll see, but needs to scratch this particular itch. I can't really complain as took my 3 children over here, 1/2 way round the world.

Good on them. This is a beautiful country but you have to be brought up here to understand our isolated position to get why so many kiwis want to travel. UK is exciting. The culture, the travel opportunities to Europe is very enticing for example and the work opportunities and historical heritage are factors.

And there’s no doubt the UK trade deal potential is more exciting for us than the UK. We have been under pressure to get something done since Australia stole a march on us.

Johnson on the Trade Deal

”We've scrummed down, we've packed tight and together we've got the ball over the line“

Oh how we laughed.

I loved New Zealand when me and my wife backpacked round the world and would have been the one place I could have settled. Its still one of the only places I would recommend to my kids to emigrate to but it is very isolated.
A lot of my wifes family emigrated to Australia and New Zealand but most of their kids come back to the UK to spend their twenties partying and getting work experience. Once married and settled down most of them have gone back again to raise their own kids. Talking to them when they lived back here they still talk about the attractions of UK.
Think its hard for a lot of people who live here to appreciate the attraction of the UK. For a start, New Zealand doesn't have the Boro.

Yes. What is is it in normal times? About 20% of the population of NZ are always away from the country travelling or working? With no travel and kiwis desperate to return home no wonder there is a property boom there.
