TOWN CENTRE BUSINESSES OFFERED POST-COVID FUNDING

ELIGIBLE businesses in Middlesbrough can now apply for grant funding to help improve the town centre post Covid-19.

The scheme is being funded through the Future High Street Fund Programme and town centre businesses can bid for grants of up to £10k.

Middlesbrough Council has been awarded £14.1m of funds to rebalance the economic mix for residential, commercial and leisure uses.

The vision is based on building a new urban community in the heart of the town. By bringing more people to live and work in central Middlesbrough. The £14.1m will be allocated on the following schemes:

  • Development of residential property
  • Adaptations to transport services and improving safety / security of town centre areas
  • Provision of cultural animation and experiences
  • Grant funding for businesses to mitigate the impact of Covid
  • Transformation of Captain Cook Square for leisure use
One of the key aims of Middlesbrough's FHSF project is to re-balance Captain Cook Square's 400,000 sq ft of predominantly retail space to a more sustainable mix of leisure and commercial uses.

The project has already attracted considerable interest from regional and national leisure operators, with a number of proposals put forward including.

  • Bowling alley with associated leisure attractions
  • Boutique cinema
  • Small/medium-scale breweries
  • Restaurants and eateries, with proposals to maximise outdoor space
  • Event hosting - temporary/seasonal use of central outdoor area
In addition to the Captain Cook Square revamp, Middlesbrough Council's £14.1 million FHSF allocation will also see investment in residential property (£3.5m), transport improvements (£1.05m) and cultural development and business support (more than £500k).

Bringing more people to live in central Middlesbrough will also increase footfall in the town centre, attract and retain skills and talent and help foster a more balanced leisure economy.

Accessibility to key facilities in the square including the bus station and car park will be paramount.

This Captain Cook square thing is lunacy. While I pray it will come off I don't see it happening.

Boutique cinema .....................we dont need another cinema. If it was something like The Arc I would say yes yes yes
Small/medium-scale breweries / Restaurants and eateries, with proposals to maximise outdoor space.............................there is going to be no shops of note in Town Centre soon so they will not attract the lunch time trade and we will end up with a load of bars that don't open until late and stay open until early hours. I cannot believe they have evicted the likes of TJ Hughes because of this project. Thats regardless of whether you shop there or not.
Event hosting - temporary/seasonal use of central outdoor area...........................Xmas sheds like the ones they have outside House of Fraser.

Agree about bringing more people to live in centre of Middlesbrough and this is a must if the project has any hope at all. See TJ Hughes closes tomorrow. It all seems a bit rushed for me. They also need to get the empty shops filled. Debenhams and probably HoF as I can see that going the same way.

Probably going to get shot down for this post but I genuinely want a town to be proud of but don't see this plan as the thing to do it. Look at Prestons vision for Albert Road and how terrible that looks at present.
 
The new Art College will be practically over the road from Capt Cook Centre will that change the area or the perception of the area?

Drove through that neck of the woods for the first time in over a year the over the day. It's definitely a striking looking building. Hopefully it helps regenerate that of town.
 
My office is nearby and I know it will mean far more footfall around about. If you walk around the railway station during weekdays you see large numbers of young people walking between Middlesbrough College and town. This means there is a lot more passing trade for shops and food outlets on that end of Albert Road and has visibly revitalised that part of town.
