Tory MP Bob Stewart guilty of racially abusing activist

A prominent Bahrainian shouts bribery alegations at Stewart outside the Bahrainian embassy.

Stewart responds - all seems rather petty. Alwadaei hardly comes out in a great light

It strikes me as a bit pathetic "you stink" "no you stink more" level of juvenile exchange. Did it really need to end up in court? Surely an apology would have sufficed? Do we have any grown ups in politics...

You have to receive a custodial sentence to be subject to a recall petition (and therefore a possible by-election).
Not true, a 6 weeks suspension, advised by the standards committee but voted on in the floor of the house also is subject to a recall petition.

Yes, I’m aware of that. Although, it’s actually 10 sitting days, not six weeks. You’re probably thinking that because Peter Bone got a six week suspension.

There are different routes to a recall petition. But they all rely on some wrongdoing by the MP in the first instance.

Anyway, in this particular instance, spanishman was asking whether the fact he had been convicted of a criminal offence would be sufficient. I was pointing out that it needs to be a custodial sentence (even a suspended one would have counted).
