Tomahawk repays employee loans with bonus

This place back in the news today. Dirty gerties.

Tomahawk have received the updated Food Safety and Hygiene rating we were waiting for following the site re-visit at Acklam Hall on 18th October 2021.
We are delighted to see the venue has been awarded an improved award of 4 which is ‘good’ - one spot away from ‘excellent’. This was a welcome rise from the recent rating of 1 from a visit on 9th September 2021 after the group immediately requested a revisit.
A spokesperson from the group has said: “Following the appeal, we were given the opportunity of a revisit and have now had our level 4 granted which we feel is appropriate.
All Tomahawk kitchens have the highest level of hygiene and best practice and the Acklam Hall site is no different.
The one thing that makes our venue so beautiful and grand to visit can also be our downfall, with the venue being a Grade 1 listed building, this means we cannot make repairs in the way we would like, or at the speed we can in other venues.
Due to these structural defects - a crack in a floor tile or hairline crack in a windowsill for example - means we will be marked down for this as it is simply the way the EHO scoring system works. We imagine if we could make good these defects then we would likely gain a full score of 5 (excellent).
In all kitchens across the group we have electronic systems in place to ensure food hygiene is met at the highest standard and customer safety in the back of house is absolutely paramount.
We have Kelsius - a modern digital food safety management system, Alert 65- an independent food safety company used for all food related incidents plus audits. Audits are in place twice a year at every site plus internal audits using their template. We also use Harri which provides training for food handling, allergen awareness and food hygiene certificates.
Any issues that were raised previously have all been dealt with and full staff retraining given to all staff to ensure the safety of all of our customers and cleanliness of our kitchens.
We want to reassure all our customers that Acklam Hall are fully up to scratch with food hygiene standards and we are delighted with our improved rating of 4 from the EHO reflecting this.”

It was given 1* for a reason.
Clearly the management has now taken action but it shouldn't have needed a poor report for it to achieve basic food hygiene standards.

I've been to the one at Acklam Hall and it was very average imo. Haven't been back since which is a shame as I thought the food at Acklam Hall was pretty good before they took over.

The report doesn't sound like "the highest levels of hygiene and best practice" to me...

The report states: “Although you were using date codes on your foods, it became apparent during the visit that these were not used consistently and some old labels were left on food containers along with the new ones.

“In addition to this, cookie dough that was beyond your designated use-by-date was found in storage.

“Such food is considered in law to be unsafe for human consumption.”

There was also a “risk of contamination” as open foods were stored directly underneath Blu Tac on the wall and foil containers “used as food scoops”.

Inspectors also found that the room reported to be used only for the preparation of raw foods was also used for the storage of “non food items including items of personal clothing and fly spray”.

Inspectors also noted: “A small number of flies were in the kitchen and it was reported that fly spray is sometimes used.

“The use of insecticide spray in a food room presents a risk of contamination therefore, you must use an alternative method to control these pests.”

Equipment and cleaning materials were also “exposed to the risk of contamination” with “cloths and sponges used for wiping food contact surfaces and equipment were stored open and in direct contact with a sink plunger” and “ready to use pots and pans were stored on the workbench directly behind open waste bins”.

The eatery, located inside the Grade 1 listed building, requires improvement in the area of cleanliness and condition of premises, equipment and facilities, including construction, layout, ventilation, facilities for hygiene, waste storage and pest control.

There were 11 items and areas that were “dirty” during the visit. These included the walls and floor coverings in the kitchen and storage areas, surfaces of the trolley in the kitchen, light switches and touch points, and shelving surfaces.

Nine pieces of equipment were also ruled to be “dirty” and the report stated that the eatery must “thoroughly clean and where necessary disinfect all items/areas and maintain in a clean condition”.

The dirty equipment included ready to use utensils, plastic food containers, weighing scales, surfaces of the milk dispenser machine, inner and outer surfaces of the ice machine and cups and other utensils stored on the windowsill.

Inspectors also found that plastic containers, cheese graters, various items of crockery and chopping boards were “worn or damaged and did not permit adequate cleaning or disinfection, presenting a risk of contamination.”

That statement Fragrance has posted is full of so many holes it's laughable.
Been a grade 1 listed building has absolutely no impact on the interior of the kitchen. The repair work mentioned is also not entirely true. The repair work needed would have to be more substantial than a cracked floor tile or a hairline crack in a windowsill to be marked down so much.
Tomahawk's alleged fancy food hygiene monitoring systems aren't going to prevent lazy **** poor chefs from keeping out of date stock in fridges. That shows me they aren't cleaning down properly on a night which there is no excuse for.
Finally. The quote that they are optimistic of a 4* rating after a review is frankly embarrassing. Every food business should be operating with 5*. I for one refuse to eat in one that doesn't.

Its simply not very good. Ive eaten at a few of them, initially through my own choice when they first opened then, after disappointing experiences, for family get togethers. First, the service is poor - as it is most places they employ kids on the minimum wage, they just dont have any sense at that age. Second, the food - if youre speciality is steak it should be obvious you get that spot on everytime, its steak - its kind of hard to mess it up. Ive had several different types of steak there - kobe, chateaubriand (apologies to smalltown but they were out of dalesteaks ). Its waaaaay overpriced based on the inferior standard of service and poor quality of the food. Ive been to a few miller and carters and if i recall correctly i think the price was comparable but the service and food was noticeably better at M&C - but still not really worth it. Id rather buy my own quality steaks and splurge on the wine and enjoy at home than go to a tomahawk thats full of offshore workers and their appalling chav girlfriends/wives. That said, theres no real quality places to dine on teesside (read middlesbrough, norton, yarm) so tomahwaks crappiness isnt unique to them.

Talk about a sense of superiority!

I do agree about buying your own and making and eating at home mind.

Restaurant chain Tomahawk Steakhouse has paid back controversial loans it received from furloughed workers – adding an extra 20% as a ‘thank you’ to staff.
A spokeswoman for Tomahawk Steakhouse said: “As part of the voluntary agreement signed by all of our staff, we promised that any monies loaned would be returned as soon as we were financially able.

“Following the Budget announcement last week, we are delighted to have been able to swiftly honour that promise this week. All staff have now received the loaned amount, along with an additional 20%, as a thank you for supporting the business at this critical time.”

In the original request letter to staff, who work across 12 restaurants, Tomahawk Steakhouse said it had a “short-term cash flow issue and it requires your help and support”. The company later said that all 500 had agreed to the loans.

Where does a sense of superiority come into it? I'd honestly love to be able to say that Tomahawk is great and give a local company effusive praise but it simply wouldnt be with any merit. Its actually rubbish, the branches Ive been to are kind of tired and dated looking already - its the same old story, restaurants dont really put much effort in locally because expectations are low and so are standards - restaurants dont make any effort and neither do the customers. If I was eating out locally I can only really say Id consider going to Vine near the Linthorpe in Middlesbrough where Ive never had a bad meal, value is good and the service is friendly and better than most places. There was one other place in the area that I was considering going to quite recently but its name escapes me. Honorably and slightly sentimental nod to Fellinis just because I have good memories of going there from way back, it was always friendly and non pretentious and all the "just go back from offshore me like" lot were in central park out of the way.

Another troll on the ignore list
Another baby who can fill out a "hurt feelings form"

Why is it that whenever you post something and someone takes exception to part or the whole of it then you're a "troll" (for gods sake grow up). If you tell me what it was i posted that upset you so much you felt you were being trolled i will remove it - cant say fairer than that. The post was fair review of one food restaurant and comment on the local food scene true to my won experiences - no trolling in it whatsoever

Offshore workers of the world unite!
That'll be the day, all usually too busy blading each other to stand united - thats why the rates have fell through the floor - that and too many 3 day riggers and HSE men that used to be traffic wardens or whatever. North Sea Oil & Gas is on its way out thankfully, not only will the planet benefit but there'll be less under educated and over paid numpties knocking about. Yous had a decent run fellas, hopefully you didnt blow it all on PCP payments and air max trainers
