Today's Tory sleaze scandal #1

Let's not be naive about this. Where companies have ethical policies it's only paying lip service. Think of them as a competency test with those who can get around the policies without getting caught getting the biggest rewards and promotions.
It absolutely isn't a lip service in most large businesses and government agencies these days. I personally know a couple of people who lost their jobs due to this, one was very high up and well thought of, but still got kicked out

Only because they got caught :D

I was thinking about it and I thought you know is a holiday such a big deal it’s just a perk of the job I’m sure rich and powerful people all over the world take kick backs. Is 15k that much but then when you think of it in terms of a bribe which is exactly what it is then it’s not on.

the Priti Patel one I’m sure lots of people in business put a good word in for friends etc but this seems to go way beyond that. The guys obviously part of the clique and ended up getting his mates a big contract at extortionate prices- I would be interested in the explanation as to why they were paying so far over the benchmark.
They are being quite brazen about this and not very clever, hopefully there is enough evidence out there to bring one of them down.
Thing is what these people do I would get sacked in my job. It should be the same for them. Joe public is a corrupt as the top brass, just laws keep joe public’s corruption in check a little better than politicians

As long as Johnson is the ultimate arbiter, nothing will be done about it. He's already ignored Patel being found guilty of breaking the ministerial code.

Patel wasn't found guilty, it was just an inquiry. The GLP are taking the government to court over this so I am not sure whether it will have a direct impact on her. I suppose it depends on the details of the case. If it addresses the ministerial code she will loose her seat in parliament. Certainly, if Johnson is found to have breached the ministerial code over his flat shenanigans he will loose his seat in parliament and a by-election will be triggered

Yes but hopefully there is a tipping point where it is proven as criminal and then Johnson won’t be able to protect them.

And people still continue to listen to the **** that comes out of his mouth and follow his orders.

Being guilty of treason should have kept her out of office in the first place

I too was in an international company where people lost their jobs for accepting "gifts". I was also involved in two negotiations in Brasil where we walked away (and reported the discussions/decisions to our compliance officer) when 'considerations' were raised in our meetings.

Of course it still happens. But some of these recent gov incidents would definitely have resulted in dismissal in my employment.

"Just an inquiry". I'll leave it at that.

In any ethical employment.....what this tells us is that this government doesn't believe in ethics

In all my jobs I have had to sign anti- bribery agreements as part of my contract. I was once offered some money to pass a safety inspection for a company. I reported this to my boss and the company that offered the bribe was removed from all tender processes.

So I think we have proven on this thread that anti-corruption rules exist throughout industry and public service and are constantly applied.....except when it's an entitled Tory politician in Johnson's cabinet, they get to ignore the rules that apply to the rest of us, they don't believe they should be held to account and to the standards as others, are we surprised? I'm not.

It’s a sorry state of affairs when Starmer used to be Director of Public Prosecutions and he can’t tear this bunch of numbskulls a new one over kick backs and sleaze!😭

Perhaps KS and the Labour Party should emphasise what would happen to the ordinary person if they did what the Tories do. Give examples of actual cases in PMQ,s then query why the Tories are different. Push the present DPP to stick his/her oar in and push for police involvement. Insist the Home Secretary gets involved and if she doesn't accuse her of being "weak on crime". As Woodall intimated, he needs to me more vocal, louder, passionate and use personal attacks. Do what Johnson does and lie if need be. Or at least exaggerate the truth. If it is big enough it might even get reported on BBC. There is plenty of ammunition.
I remember a tactic Blair and Prescott used was to refute every Tory lie immediately at every opportunity. Something that Labour have failed to do for 11 years.

No they’re not, if he grew a pair and got into them rather than sounding like a
psychologist listen to someone on a couch he might find he has better results.
So he shouts at them and they shout back, end result, nothing. Until the law is applied to them through the courts there is nothing really he can do. PMQs is pantomime but has no real power. When did an opposition actually manage to get action taken by courts against a minister due to saying something in PMQs?
