Time to make facemasks mandatory everywhere public?

I mean it IS an act of selfishness. Even you have given the benefits to YOURSELF. Which is again, ignoring the fact that the mask is to help slow down the spread to others. I accept the fact you think it is worse for your own health but I'd be curious to know the evidence you have for this
Talking to people form around the country and it appears down here in London we are better at wearing facemasks than anywhere else. The majority of people still don't wear them though which is terrible.

It's time to make them mandatory in public areas, at least enclosed ones or ones where people will be spending a lot of time together. Also it's time to start dishing out proper fines for this. I saw loads of people on buses yesterday who weren't wearing any. That IS supposed to be mandatory.

While we are at it: COVER YOUR NOSE AS WELL AS YOUR MOUTH!
Yet it's OK to have thousands of demonstrators walk through our towns & cities throughout the country, causing havoc, vandalise what they see fit, with a large proportion not wearing face masks, not even 2 inches away never mind 2 meters because they have something to fight against

It takes 2 minutes to learn how to use a mask and dispose of one safely.

Why the government aren't using public information broadcasts to do it only they can explain.

Dispose of one safely, the amount I see why cycling & walking about that have just been threw on the pavement because that individual has finished with it, yet those who don't wear a face mask are selfish

I didn't say that, but if you're not using one because you aren't going to be protected then yes, it's selfish. What you're doing is not considering others.

It's the same for those throwing them away like that.

Two wrongs don't make a right.

Litter should carry the same fines as fly tipping in Scotland, up to £40,000 I think it is, it would soon stop

I'm not for one minute condoning the wearing of FM, if people chose to wear them & they feel safer doing so then I'm fine with that, I don't have an issue & will respect people for doing so

I suspect that some people gain a false sense of invincibility when wearing a mask and don't bother with the other stuff like distancing and not touching surfaces etc. A bit like the cycle helmet thing - but with viruses rather than buses and lorries.

Also, if you are infected with no symptoms, the mask becomes a big reservoir of warm damp viral soup and we're not really skilled in how to manage that - unlike say a trained health worker.
Which is precisely the argument the government used guided by the science, from March to June. Funny it’s only since they stopped listening to the experts that this view has changed.

CtC ‘you scruffy urchin’ really, sensible debate into name slinging, a shame really.

Perhaps because of this?

"There are some circumstances when wearing a face covering may be marginally beneficial as a precautionary measure...

It is important to know that the evidence of the benefit of using a face covering to protect others is weak and the effect is likely to be small..."

It's not about making yourself feel safe, it's about you yourself not spreading it. It's an act of unselfishness. You have no symptoms but you can still spread it, that's what it's all about.

It's basically doing your best to protect the community, like not throwing litter about.

So those who are deaf and rely on lip reading for communication? b***r them yeah?
You're not putting yourself at risk by wearing a mask, and wash your hands more, you scruffy urchin.
Scruffy urchin?

🤣🤣🤣

If your going to insult me at least go all in instead halfway childish name calling.

I'd hazard a guess I probably wash my hands more times a day than anybody else on here 🤣

“So those who are dead and rely on lip reading for communication? “

bet lip reading doesn’t work for them either :geek: or mask wearing

Mandatory here in Illinois when in public and unable to socially distance more than 6 feet. You wouldn't get into a supermarket or restaurant (outdoor dining only at the moment) without one (but you can remove the mask to eat when safely at your table).

The curve is being well and truly flattened in Illinois right now (R number heading towards 0.8). Coincidence?

I have one on at least 8 hours a day and I'll concede I'm probably not your typical face-toucher as a result. I'm not in the sort of exposure environment like a hospital or care home, but also, as a carer for two shielding people I'd be extremely selfish as a social-distancing Nazi to not do everything I can to protect others.
I'd suggest looking to the US to see how persistent this virus is at exploiting any chance to spread, but while I'd prefer mandatory mask usage I'm not going to be campaigning for it. Mask wearing is pointless however if you're not doing it correctly or not maintaining great hygiene to go with it.

Once again Britain refuses to learn from other countries and acts far too late. Here its been mandatory (and enforced) for a few weeks in all public places - even outside if you can´t keep 1.5m away. Shops, etc. don´t let you enter without one. I would say that 90 odd percent of people are wearing them that you see in the street. Its become a habit.

About the cost, the government here fixed the price at a maximum 60 cents for the typical hospital type ones so its not exactly expensive.

No. Obviously

The benefits of wearing a face mask are minimal and the wider use of face masks by seamingly healthy people is not supported by the current evidence and carries some critical risk.

This is why scientists should make scientific decisions, not a message board.

I thought you'd appreciate that I know how much you have to wash your hands in your game.

I don't understand the other bit about lip reading though.
How is a deaf person supposed to communicate with someone by lip reading if their mouths are covered?
