Time for VAR

Referring decisions are supposed to even themselves out over the season but I'm not seeing any evidence of it so far in the games this season.

I was beginning to think refs had it in for us because of Warnock, but I believe we'd have had all 6 points with VAR for Wilder's two games in charge.

With VAR from the start of the season we'd probably be in the top three.

Obviously the top three will have had decisions go against them also and there's no excusing the Boro players under-performing, but I am beginning to think we aren't getting our fair share of decisions

Post match reviews would be great but it would mess with the TV schedules. We have back to back coverage every weekend and they can only squeeze so many betting adverts in.

I still think we'd have lost last night with VAR.

I don't think it was handball for Tavernier's shot, and the only decision that I think might have been altered was a penalty shout for them.

We'd have beaten Millwall though.

Yeah ours wasn't a penalty, his arm was by his side, and if it hadn't hit his arm it would ahve hit his body anyway.

Don't think either of theirs were pens either, but their first shout was a bigger shout than ours.

Milwall was a foul, and probably a Red also, if not at least a booking.

I mean a review by an independent ref, nothing to do with the TV schedules, with penalties for cheating, that is post match cards given for diving, shirt pulling, excessive foul play etc. not picked up by the referee during the game.

VAR is already murdering what is becoming an all too dreary event.

I'd take VAR in the championship right now. Basic decisions like throw ins, corners, offsides.. let alone the blatant red cards that are not given.

It just feels like we're being totally ripped off as fans. The Championship isn't what it used to be, in terms of monies we're pretty much Premier League 2

as for the officials it really seems like we're just handed the rejects, like the raggy dolls of the refereeing world. they need support with VAR and there's no reason why it shouldn't be there should be there.

VAR seems to be working in the premier this season, if it's purely a cost issue why we don't have it in the EFL that seems wrong to me, given the amount of money generated in the Championship. On our specific issues in the last couple of games it's only if the ref can be persuaded that he needs to look at an incident again that the decision is over turned, so wouldn't have changed anything last night and might not on Saturday, as the ref was in a decent position to see the assault on Paddy.

There was a blatant corner we should’ve had about two minutes before the Tav shot that started the Preston breakaway and eventual equaliser. Those are the ones that are annoying as it was clearly a corner and the Preston player who knocked it out trotted towards his own goal to defend it, only for the linesman to flag for a goal kick.

The penalties like Tav last night, the push on their lad and then their lad ‘hand-balling’ it, I can take or leave those. Neither of them were pens. Get on with the game. But the decision for the corner, Jesus wept.

Things like that and the blatant time-wasting from Preston are the things that really grate. Evans went down clutching his head when everyone knew what had happened. No talking to, no booking, no discussion with the linesman. Cheating going completely unpunished and another 90 seconds wasted. 4 minutes added on and almost all of it wasted.

And I know Boro waste time too, and when it’s as bad as it was from Preston last night I think it’s unacceptable. I just hate that referees fall for it time and again. Like McNair facing his own goal, initiating contact with an opposition player, going down and getting a free-kick. It’s NOT a foul! FFS.

It would be harder to implement in the Championship given the larger number of matches.

In the Premier League it's all televised with multi-angle cameras (abroad if not here) and all reviewed from Stockley Park in London, and there tends to only be 3 matches on at once because of the spread for television.

They'd need to install and staff VAR staff multi-angle cameras in every stadium in the Championship in every fixture, without the advantage of huge TV money offsetting the cost.

Currently there's an upper limit of 3-4 concurrent matches in the Premier League, though usually less.

There were 5 in the Championship last night, there are 7 tonight, there are 8 on Saturday.

The Saturday matches also overlap with the Premier League matches where they're already utilising VAR, so the workload and cost is increased even more, in a financially poorer division.

On another note it was good to see a ref punish a player with a red card for hacking a player down from behind without any attempt to get the ball just a very cynical challenge.Lee Bowyer was incensed but his player basically kicked his opponent to stop him breaking, last man or not it was dangerous play, and Bowyer tried to claim that it is an acceptable thing to do .

Earl didn't get booked on at least four occasions last night before he eventually got a yellow in the 85th minute.

I don't think VAR would change that but the referees need to be publicly held accountable

How much do you think £10m a season?

How much do you think £10m a season?

Apparently it was around £11,000 a match in the FA Cup when it was first introduced, I'm not sure if it's the same in the Premier League, but assuming it was it would cost each individual Championship club
£506,000 a season to run VAR, on top of the current referee fees.
Which is actually less than I thought it would be if the numbers from a few years ago are accurate.

But there would surely be added costs to that with getting everything up to speed and ensuring there are enough refereeing staff given the fixture pile up.

It might not be as insurmountable as I first thought, but it's still not something I think I'd enjoy inside the stadium itself.
But I'm fully used to it when watching on TV now, so I'm sure I'd adapt.

I think VAR would have helped a Boro especially under Warnock. I'm sure that I could put up with delays that VAR sometimes produces to obtain decisions which are mostly truthful rather than referees' biased preferences. VAR is the way ahead, so bring it on.

Top three my ****. :D
If you aren't seeing things evening out that's probably due to your bias rather than anyone elses.
The championship is a blessed relief where a goal is a goal and you don't have passages of play which are probably offside but the linesman hasn't stuck his flag up yet. You can still enjoy football in the moment.
I'd rather people accepted that referees make mistakes, much like our own players, and that we should try to affect things we are able to change, such as the mistakes made our players, rather than whining about things we can't change such as a mistake by a referee.

Generally speaking we pay far too much attention to the moaners in our society.

Surely that £11k is based on having 10 or so HD/4K cameras there, already being operated and broadcast live so that Stockwell has a feed to review?

Another no - get rid of it and make referees (a) better and (b) accountable.

I sit pretty much in line with the corner flag in the SW, three or four times last night there was a fairly easy decision to make and the lino (assistant referee?) didn't immediately flag, he seemed to look to the referee to see what he was indicating then move his flag accordingly, weak, timid and unsure. Like most of the officials in the Champo.
