Time for a second lockdown?

With cases rising and now over a thousand a day. Clearly the current measures aren't controlling the virus, the spread is getting worse. How do we slow it down?

Sadly I would say close the pubs and restaurants - based on no scientific evidence whatsoever but based on my own observations I truly think it is indoor congregating that is the issue. With the thousands upon thousands attending the BAME rallies shoulder to shoulder and Beachgate I was expecting a huge spike in cases but it never materialsised.
However as the pubs, restaurants and shopping has returned we now see the cases back on the way up.

Go into lockdown and get tougher with enforcement, if we don’t this will just drag on and on.

Yeah maybe. Certainly lots of outdoors congregating has gone on without seemingly triggering a spike. You had all the VE Day celebration stuff too.

Be interesting to see where these cases are originating from if possible (appreciate it might not be and that's part of the problem no doubt).

I was on several trains at the weekend and huge groups of men and women going to Leeds or York, ***ed on the train and none wearing masks. The trains were totally packed out and zero social distancing. I had to use the train for medical appointments otherwise I 100 percent wouldn't be on them... It was a disgrace

Another lockdown would put the final nail in an already crippled economy. Sweden have almost eradicated Covid without lockdown and a death toll of 6,000 from a population of 8 million. The deaths in the pipeline from undetected and untreated cancers due to the first lockdown will be worse than Covid itself . The effect on families and mental health from job losses and bankruptcy could be felt for a generation. The stats clearly show that this disease kills the old and the ill. Isolate them not everyone.
Protect the vulnerable and let the healthy go about their normal lives . Otherwise there won’t be an economy to fund the NHS that everyone is rightly so keen to protect.

Sweden have, yes. We have not. Given our track and trace system is innefective I ask again, other than a lockdown, what else can we do?

The science has constantly changed as more and more learning about the virus happened. There does have to be a balance and some peoples attitudes need to change.
Mask wearing should be compulsory and non-compliance should be punished. Review every couple of weeks.
Conspiracy theorists should be locked away for until their Apophenia is cured. Protect others from being exposed to their nonsense.

By contrast, I met up with some friends in London three weeks ago. The normally bustling areas of Southwark and London Bridge were largely deserted, on a Friday night. I was the only person in my carriage on a 10:30pm train home. A train which is normally standing room only.

That's not sustainable. Loads of businesses are going to go bust. Long term lockdown can't be the answer.

There probably does have to be a bit of a trade off between the economy...and jobs, and livelihoods, and the risks of an increased death rate.

Are you one of them that would be willing to "take one" for the team? Maybe you could offer one of your elder members of your family to take one?

Certainly from my experience of going out to pubs recently, the track and trace is not going to work as the giving out of contact details seems to have remained optional rather than mandatory, I thought that it was a mandatory requirement, as part of the guidelines for reopening??
