I realised my first ever football match I went to was 56 years ago to the very day!!

it wasnt a Boro game though. My dad took me to Hillsborough to watch the Busby Babes play Wednesday. Charlton, Law and Best and look who was at CF for Wednesday! And whilst United won the League that season Wednesday won 1-0.

Big John was a defender initially at Wednesday wasn't he?
He scored 21 goals in 53 games for Wednesday and one of the reasons he came to Boro was because he was upset at being left out of the 1966 cup final team. Kevin Howley was the referee, I see.

I was wondering why I was not at that game then I remembered I was playing rugby for Sheffield Tigers that season

Hickton was indeed a right back when he first arrived on the scene at Hillsbrough, probably the season before. I've a feeling that the only game I saw there that season was the Cup semi final Man U v West Ham and it poured down all day

We used to go in the Leppings lane end at Wednesday and the the front of the John Street stand at United ( United only had three sides back then as Bramall Lane was also a Yorkshire county cricket ground)

The Busby Babes tended to be a term used for the pre Munich team as the majority were very young, Tommy Taylor, Dave Pegg, Duncan Edwards, Eddie Coleman etc.

I remember going to Sheff Utd v Boro, Xmas 1975 & Brammel Lane had 3 sides then

Colin Dobson No 11 for SW. born in Eston, there was a post about him a couple of months ago.
Big John fell out with SW manager for not being picked for the 1966 FA Cup Final. This lead directly to Stan Anderson signing for us.

Signing him for us! Sorry!

Johnsmith not to my recollection - I'd look up my collection if I could find the damn thing. I can find the speedway programmes but footie ? thinking more about it he might even have played centre half initially

Must have a look again to see if I can find the foootie progs - they are in a box but I'm not sure what the box looks like even !

Well it confirms my misapprehension that Hickton was converted from fullback to Centre Forward by Stan Anderson. Clearly I was totally wrong there. He was a successful CF at SW.

Eddie Holliday on the left wing in that central league game, part of the Boro forward line Day,maclean,Clough,Peacock ,Holliday. Three of them capped by England

That is correct Almeria. I've eventually found my fottie progs only to find that the Sheffield Wed progs have all been skipped along with the Sheffield United ones. By the time Eddie got to Sheffield he was a parody of the young lad tearing up Div 2 defences. He's main tactic was to push and run and he was much quicker than the average player over the first few yards.

The ability to travel at full speed with the ball under close control and change direction without any loss of control and speed with which he terrorised right backs in the late 50s had gone

They were known as the £50 forward line as they were all signing on fee only. In those days the signing on fee was £10

Whilst three of the were capped by England, Billy Day was the Army 100yds champion in the days of national service

Sorry Capybara - I repeated your story about JH not being selected for cup final a few posts later.

7 of the Man Utd team were in the 11 in 1968 to win the European Cup Final.,3 years later!! How's that for building a team and sticking with it.
