Three Charlton players refusing to play past contract

Middlesbrough’s relegation rivals Charlton have been rocked by the news that three of their key players won’t finish the season with the club.

Lee Bowyer has told TalkSport that Lyle Taylor, Chris Solly and David Davis have declined to play on beyond the terms of their current contracts.

This will have a big impact on Charlton's chances of survival and you have to feel for them. The conditions that the league is going to resume in is giving others an unfair advantage and just one of the many other reasons why it should have been void.

They are third bottom aren't they? And in complete disarray off the field. And now on the field. Have they even got an owner, anymore?
They were one of the clubs really pushing to play, as were Luton. To avoid the drop.
 
These are exceptional circumstances. If it's OK for other players, why not those three? I can't see clubs queuing up to sign them with an attitude like that.

I think they are one of the clubs that could go to the wall through lack of finances.
 
They pick up a serious injury between now and the end of the season then they're screwed aren't they? Have Charlton even offered them an extension?

They have to do what's right for their career. I don't blame them. Just as I wouldn't blame our out of contract players.

I don't fall out with their decision, careers are short enough in football and why risk a contract that only lasts 9 games (unless its part of a contract extension or course)

I'm sure the clubs interested in Taylor won't be put off in the slightest, in fact, if its us he's signing for we may have influenced his decision.

I think you are missing my point. These lads would have been available to play for their club if we hadn’t had the pandemic outbreak, their contracts would have finished after the end of the league in normal circumstances. Charlton now have 3 players less to choose from and are being penalised by the league due to go ahead.

Void isn't the same as cancelling and using weighted ppg or whatever has been decided. It is ridiculous to promote or relegate any team on a half completed season. The season can't be completed under the original circumstances. The season should be void and replayed with all contingencies known in advance.

With 9 games to go, they would've finished the season with the same risk of injury having an impact on a medical elsewhere.

So I'd imagine that they've already signed pre-contract agreements with other clubs and are therefore not free to sign with Charlton.

Oh I agree. I just wasn't really addressing your point. I think someone else said it'd put other clubs wanting to sign them though, which is more I was responding to.

It's not exactly the same though is it? They're not currently injured (I assume). You're saying they should voluntarily sign an extension for a couple of months where they carry all the risk.

Honouring the end of an existing contract is different. The theoretical risk of them getting injured is maybe the same (although arguably not, can still get injured training and it's extra months they need to get through) but the circumstances are very different.
